Does immigration ever make exceptions for hiring citizens of South Africa to teach English? I have a friend with a tefl cert. and uni. degree who is South African (and a native English speaker). He would like to work at a language school in Ind. Is this possible or should I tell him not to waste his time? |

I knew a South African couple who were teaching English here back in 2007/2008. No idea how they got a KITAS but the school they worked at has been known to produce photoshop copies of TEFL certificates in the past to get KITAS's for teachers who didn't have one. Therefore maybe they paid someone to let the visa go through. |

Our school recently tried to bring on a very well qualified South African woman and her application was rejected due to country of origin. Based on that, I'd say it's best your friend looks elsewhere. |

How come South Africans don't make it on to the magic list? Their accent is no worse than any others on the list! I suppose because for some English won't be their first language but for plenty it is. And for many their English is a darn sight better than a large number of Brits/Americans etc, probably! Hehe |

Probably not such a bad thing for the English language sector as far as employment conditions are concerned. Considering South Africans, in general could do the job just as well, yet are willing to work for much lower salaries than the British, Americans, Australians and New Zealanders. |

it mostly has to do with the official languages of each country. northern ireland is also left off the list because its official language is gaelic. South Africa has 11, singapore has 4, both of these countries include english as their official language but are not recognized by indonesia as native speakers of english. strangely enough, the usa doesnt have an official language yet their citizens are included in the 5 coutries that indonesia recognizes. right or wrong, as with many things in indonesia, it is what it is and trying to find the logic is an exercise in futility |
