You ought to read more carefully. I already said that I don't drink, so why would I bother.

I READ all of your posting, I will have you know. Just because you don't drink isn't what I'm getting at.

Do you or any other posters here now anyone who has got the liquor permit in their first month....because when I was there I sure as shit didn't know anyone who had, it was all mostly the long termers who had theirs...and you know how the cogs move in Oman...very slowly, with a lot of 'inshallahs', and some patience for all the red tape, and then some...

Have a good weekend

Oh yes, UV, you can get a sim card, just take your passport with you. For the bank account you will need the passport and a letter from your employer comfirming your salary. I know because I have done it. However you will need your labour card and the salary letter if you want to buy a car on credit terms. I even obtained my Nawras Wimax broadband using only my passport.

Interesting. When I tried to get a nawras sim card last time, I was told I needed the labour card?! But thanks for this, I will try it out...

The bank account stuff still pisses me off, the recruiter says they need to pay your salary into an Omani bank, the banks say you can't open an account until you got the letter and your labour card. I'm not saying all banks are like that, maybe things changed, but with Bank Muscat they were most insistent on labour card, passport and letter all together, it was however useful to have the electron function on the card to order stuff online.

I just looked up Shinas Tech on Google Earth, nice looking buildings, nice looking area. Crap website!!!

It would seem that most Ministries use BankMuscat. We went with HSBC, no probs, both of us have a Visa card with a very nice credit limit. Just because your employer uses a particular bank does not mean that you have to do so. Friends of mine are with BM and they are always complaing about the rubbish internet banking they have. As for HSBC? again no problemo. Works sweet and never had a problem logging in.

Mayhaps UV, you ought to give them a try, though if you are in Shinas, you may have to go to Muscat to open an account.

Duffy,

I may be posted in Nizwa, so not sure what options that will leave, presumably BM Confused Rolling Eyes

Also, I can't figure out the allowance, it says 250 OR a month, but a friend has told me I will get nothing in Nizwa for that as most places are full up...any thoughts?

Ah Urbie... in the first month? Therein lies the problem... unrealistic expectations. Laughing At my first Gulf job in the late 80s (Oman) and another one ten years later (Kuwait) - both government universities direct hire, it took the employer at least three months to manage to get any salary payment organized. I had the bank account... it was just very empty. Now my last job in Oman... in Muscat... I completed all paperwork within the first month... but a liquor license wasn't in the mix.

This situation has improved over the years and, as always, depends on your employer. But, I would expect things to not move quickly in these jobs out in the hinterlands. So much has to be done in the capital it seems.

Can't you still get a beer from a fellow teacher or at a local hotel? Cool

VS
(Good Luck on Nizwa... better option in many ways that some of the others)

Thanks for the support Razz

I am assuming there will be one hotel with a bar in Nizwa, but at least until I could get my own permit, I was hoping to find a friendly indian to fill the gap...but no worries, I am not one of these guys I have met before (and sadly there are a lot in Oman) who feel compelled to booze it up each night after work...it could also get you fired Rolling Eyes Evil or Very Mad

Cheers and the odd cold beer,
Urbie

UV,

There are two hotels with bars in Nizwa, one is in the town itself, the Falaj Daris and the other is the Golden Tulip Hotel, that one is nearer Birkat Al-Mouz, towards Nizwa University. Each charge at least 2 OMR for a shot of spirits.

When you think that you can go to OUA or African Eastern in Madinat Sultan Qaboos in Muscat and then MACE in Ruwi to get a a litre of Vodka/Gin/Whiskey for 2.5 OMR, well, you will want to get your LL permit ASAP!!

I and others would be able to help with your "requirements" Should they not be too demanding. At least until you get your own permit.

You can find a "friendly" (high booze cost) Indian but, why bother for the few weeks it takes to get your Labour card?

I'd rather discuss this via pm with you if possible, but meant to be going to nizwa. Just wondering if 250 OMR is enough for a place, bachelor, sin mujer sin hijos!!
