|

This is a quote from a job ad that just landed in my intray:
'your return flight ticket will be refunded if your overall performance by the end of the academic year is satisfactory, so please keep the receipt.'
Not seen this before. Is it common? |

No it is more common just not to pay it. I saw this posting also. They pay 3000 rmb and you get to experience China. This the problem today. I have been told at least 6 times that everything will be settled at the end. Overtime airfare and each time you get stiffed. |

A definite non-starter. |

THis is China's problem at the moment. All the migrant workers are back home. In China you work as a group and the workers in a factory usually come from the same village. So they go home and decide to work at another factory. It is tough for the owner of a factory to know what to do. You often see demonstrations this time of the year because the worker has not been paid. They want them to come back so they hold their wages. China needs labor laws. |

I agree with the negatives but I've always had automatic refunds or payments of an agreed amount, so that wasn't the intent of the OP.
It was the first ad I've seen with that clause and if it is creeping in newbies should be on the lookout. |

schools sometimes try to sneak new items into a contract, and once its in, its in to stay. not only newbies but people who intend on renewing a contract have to be on the lookout for these things. don't assume the contract is the same from year to year. |

They don't have to "sneak" them in; my present employer has changed the terms of my current contract. Whaddya gonna do? Take 'em to court? |

Agree with that - it can be blatant.
I've had utilities go from free to part subsidised.
Salary go down by 1000RMB/m.
Break fee quintuple.
4 of the six teachers that had that pulled simply changed the contract term from 2 semesters to 1 and departed.
Cuts both ways. |

I saw that posting. I agree that those kinds of subjective clauses are a danger sign. Steer clear.

if you have a problem with whatever they try to change in a contract you discuss it with them. our school tried to slip in a couple of changes to our contracts last year. we didn't like them, we told the fao why, and they were removed. if the school values your services they'll be willing to do this. |

There's the rub; most schools in China DON'T value foreign teacher's services. They don't know and don't care if you're a good teacher, there's always another Caucasian face with a pulse to fill the void. |

China does have labor laws. 98 articles just enacted a few years back. http://www.gov.cn/ziliao/flfg/2007-06/29/content_669394.htm and http://www.baliprocess.net/files/China/China_labour%20law%20of%20the%20people%20republic%20of%20china_1994-eng.pdf for the English version. I have been to the Labor Bureau before (against an employer) and the laws do somewhat work. |

'the laws do somewhat work' - is a little too vague for me to trust conditional refund of around 10,000RMB worth of airfare.
Imagine it!
You're booked out of there. Home for the summer - yay and the school says they have a report from little Johnny that says you wiped your nose on your sleeve or somesuch and that means you have failed their quality test.
Nah leave those ones for the idiots. |
