I wonder if the other recruiters such as Nord Anglia are also dealing with a similiar situation. Or is it just the candidates who have been selected for the program with Teachaway?

Why would you be expected to have $1000s on arrival? Malasia is a cheap and you should be able to survive on a few hundred dollars until the first pay.

As for the reference check.....I can imagine that many employers would not be too happy to answer so many questions about past employees.

And the sudden drop in salary just before departure..... you made the right decision not to go!

Foreigners pay at that rate in Malaysia? Does it include free public health insurance?

aaah the infamous 'Asian Switch'. It's an art form in Korea, as some of us have learned to our great sorrow. You're lucky that they informed you! Usually you'd just be given more classroom hours at the same rate of pay.

They seemed to do that with everyone. Good on you for not taking it.

Not only this stuff, but the Malaysian MOE also wanted me to color copy every single page of my current passport, stamped or not. I have never had this request from any other country. Trying to see if I had been to Israel, most likely? These people must be mega-xenophobic!

And not very practical either. It's simple enough to get another passport if you HAVe been to the "wrong" countries.

Definately! Easily the most xenophobic and insular country I've ever been to. Think Korea on steriods! When it comes to housing, they will refuse to rent their homes to non-Malays (meaning non-Muslims). This practice is widespread all over the country. And even if they do rent to you, don't expect to get what you paid for or your deposit refunded as promised!

Malaysia is not cheap to get settled in. Housing and transportation will cost a small fortune.

My HOD here in Oman will be horrified if I have to put such a document in front of him. I hope they have given up on that requirement.
