First off, thanks for taking the time to read this and post any helpful insights you may have on this topic.

I am looking for advice on where and how to look for English teaching jobs at universities abroad. Whether it is online, direct contact of universities or recruiters, or any other way that people go about this process, all advice (though preferably as constructive and good-natured as possible) is welcome.

Ill give you a brief introduction of myself that I hope will help with any advice-giving. I am in the process of writing my thesis for my MAESL, which I will be doing the research for during my time teaching abroad. I have both an American and an EU passport. I would prefer to teach in Asia or Africa. I have began applying to a few universities abroad that my US university has faculty and student exchanges with, but I want to spread my net as wide as possible to give myself plenty of options and opportunities.

Ill stop there in the interest of keeping this short, but I certainly will answer any questions that people may have that could help tailor answers or suggestions.

Thanks for your time.

By and large, MOST (but not all) universities in Asia and outside of China will require that you be "in country" at your expense for the interview before you are hired.

Many universities in Asia will NOT consider your application, especially from abroad, until you have actually completed your MA (and in some cases, at the best universities, not until you are ABD/Phd.).

All that said, even without completion of your MA you can still land university positions as guest lecturer or ESL teacher at most lower tier universities in Asia IF you have a nice application package and present yourself well at the interview. This is especially true in less popular locations in China (as in "NOT Beijing, Shanghai, etc), outside of BKK (or any other capital city) or places like Vietnam, and Indonesia.

Tom,

Thanks. That was a very helpful response.

The MA issue is a sticky one. I have all the coursework finished, but my thesis was designed to do my research while teaching abroad. Therefore, I am more than happy to take a teaching position at any decent university that has the education of students as their priority.

Do many people travel to a country solely with the intent of finding a teaching position? If so, when is this normally done, and where would one begin looking short of just hitting the pavement and knocking on school doors? I have fired off a few CV's to universities abroad for teaching positions starting this fall.

Again, thanks very much for the helpful response. This is the kind of information I was hoping to find here.

Seamus

Do you know where you want to teach? Where I work you MAY be able to work in lower colleges or universities without having finished your MA. Keep in mind the pay and benefits won't be as good though.

Here are some places in general.

● Academic Careers
● Butler: List of universities
● Chronicle
● Higher Ed Jobs
● Joy Jobs (fee involved)
● TES
● TESOL
● The Guardian
● TIE Online (fee involved)
● University Directory
● World University Jobs

Some do, some don't. I didn't. I just applied to basically ALL the uni jobs in the country where I wanted to work that didn't require
1. an online application
2. an in person interview

It sonds bad, but lower your standards. everyone starts at the bottom. With an MA in progress and no? uni experience, you'll have to start there too Smile With time and quals you move up though.

My advice, just apply and apply, left and right to uni jobs. AS the academic year gets closer, more universities will find out they haven't filled positions and will become more flexible in who they hire.

It's usually done as much as 6 months to a semester in advance. Last minute jobs can be a couple weeks or days beofre the semester begins. Semester starts are different all over the world. Which area do you want to be in?

Are you on linkedin.com ? That's another good place to start networking. Dave's is fantastic as well!
