Evening folks,

I've been going to Gold's Gym over in Harajuku for a few years now, but I'm getting bored of it and would like to start boxing or kickboxing. So, I was wondering if anyone living in the Tokyo area could recommend a gym or two. Right now I'm looking into Lefty Gym near Shinjuku's Takashimaya. Does anyone know if it's a decent gym or not? Any input would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Ken

I know of one, but it's in Urawa. Interested?

Thanks for the love.

I'm interested, but kind of concerned about the gym's operating hours. Urawa Station is about a 50 minute commute from where I live. Is there a website?

Wow! You are welcome. This is a first. You must be new here. Either way, welcome and thanks for the love. We need it!

Here's the link: http://www.bufuan.com/bufuan700.html

It's all in Japanese and evidently you have to be good in Japanese to join. My partner's been studying there for days and the sensei is full on. He is always traveling abroad to teach in Thailand, India, America, etc. His son is a champion as well, I reckon. However, having to commute to your gym is no fun, so that may be an issue.

Good luck to you! Kick some butt!

Thanks for the link. If you don't mind, I have a couple of questions.

Does the branch near Nishi-urawa Station offer adult classes? The page detailing the class/branch information is kind of jumbled and I can't tell.

The website says that foreigners aren't allowed without an introduction from a current gym member. Do you have more information about that?

Although it's probably best to leave it as 'don't ask, don't tell', but what's the gym's policy on tattoos?

Give me a few to look into those questions for you.

It comes out okay on my screen. Adult classes are from 18:50-20:30.

I must confess that I only looked at the link because of this--never heard of a "Japanese-only" doujou before (and I've been studying martial arts for well over 20 years...). You're right, it does say that in Japanese. Quite frankly, I'd say no (and keep looking) just based on that.

Unfortunately, I don't live anywhere near Tokyo, so can't suggest a place. However, a quick YahooJapan! search--pairing the terms "キックボクシングジム" and "東京"--turned up over 100,000 hits, including what seems to be a sizable number of gyms. May want to work your way through some of the other gyms first.

Thanks. I double checked the site and it's still jumbled. I'm thinking that it's not Safari friendly.

I googled it a bit, and came up with too many hits. That's why I decided to see if anyone here had a recommendation or two. I may just end up doing what you suggested and sift my way through more of the websites.

Thanks.

I recently signed up for a month's pass to a boxing gym in Meguro. I haven't been there yet (signed up through Groupon) so I can't say what's it's like but if you are near Harajuku then it's a closer option.

This is their site- http://www.n9ff.com/system.html

From what I hear, Oomori is a hot spot for Kickboxing as well as MMA. A few of my friends train down there and constantly see MMA fighters at the Golds Gym near the station.
