Here is another incident:

3 robbers were captured by the police after robbing the driver and passengers on-board a bus:

"Izcalli detiene a 3 presuntos ladrones
Los sujetos, entre ellos un menor de edad, fueron capturados al momento en que asaltaban a los pasajeros y al conductor de un camin sobre la Autopista Mxico-Quertaro"

One of the best things about Mexico was hopping on a bus and discovering far flung pueblos in different states. Some of my best memories were of weekends spend travelling like that. It is far too dangerous in many parts of the country at the moment to do those sorts of things.

Back to the topic of urban public transport, this article http://www.ciudadanosenred.org.mx/node/27604 purports to list the 10 most public-transport-assault-prone zones in the DF.

As a side note, the first paragraph cites the police chief announcing that as of April buses will be required to keep their interior lights on to increase safety for passengers boarding and disembarking.

For starters, I wish they would enforce exterior lights! I'm not a fan of close encounters at night with moving dark matter on unlit streets.

Its interesting that most of the areas in the top 10 are not particularly bad areas, and usually have a decent police presence. Perhaps because people travelling in poorer areas dont have good stuff to steal.......interesting, aside from Tacuba I wouldnt have picked any of those places.

Moreover, it could be a reporting or policing bias; namely that incidents in these zones get reported and/or recorded precisely because there is more police presence

Yes, that could be too. I saw an article recently that there are now more patrols in higher crime areas, and that crime has gone down something like 50% due to the patrols. What surprises me the most is the Alameda area, there are LOADS of cops all over the place, and I am there everything day, sometimes a couple of times and have never even seen an incident. Well, except once, a tranvestite was trying to use the womens john, and the women were beating the crap out of him. The cops came, laughed and let the women finish him off.

Of course this is an incident. In fact it's an outrageous act of violence towards another human. Absolute shame on the cop that did nothing to protect her, and shame on the women who thought it okay to take the law in their own hands. Change the characters in the play and suddenly it's not so funny? Should she have tried to use the men's john and risked rape?

People really need to get over their phobias. Much of Western Europe's had this non-issue resolved for years - unisex public washrooms.

And on that note Carnival is just around the corner and from what I've seen here in Veracruz the ladies are welcome to use 'our' johns to relieve themselves and touch-up their makeup.

DL

My save-you-the-trouble section:
People who are transgendered generally would prefer that you refer to them as the gender they have turned themselves into.

And my two pesos worth:
The chance that there will be a rash of men cross dressing to gain access to womens public washrooms is slim to none given the machismo mindset prevalent here

Maybe I'm uninformed on the subject, but aren't most transvestites men dressed as women? I assume the women didn't want the lid lifted?

Anyway, genderless public toilets are the only civilised option IMO.

You have it right...a man dressed as woman. It's easy to make assumptions on Teresa's very brief story, but as liberal as Mexico City may be, there are things you simply don't do as a man. Entering the women's washroom is one of them.

Who said they lift the lid? You're in need of a broader range of friends Wink

Exactly my point. Bet ya dollars to donuts when a pretty one is all made up, most men would be hard pressed Embarassed to know the difference.

And just for fun, remember http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gaMS_5i0Bbs Cool

Oh you'd win a lot of dollars for your donuts on that bet. Anyone who has driven down Tlapan avenue any evening would know.

But...seems in Teresa's story, it was the women who made the spot, not men.

I guess we'll never know, but yes, it would seem the women in that instance failed to have any sympathy. Maybe they were jealous... maybe she pinched someone's mascara... maybe (oh the horror) she DID leave the seat up. Very Happy
