Hi all,

This now seems to be the new visa application requirements as stated by the FEB (Foreign Experts Bureau) for foreign teachers wishing to work in China.

Anyone have confirmation of this?

Either your employer is telling you this or that your local authorities require it. There is no official such policy.

However, the government has been clear that they will NOT allow you to convert F/L visa's in-country any longer and that you'll need to get it done from outside China if you don't enter legally (Z visa).

except in cases where there's an exception.

I don't think that anyone can confirm that these requirements as they apply country-wide. To my knowledge, the only area requesting a criminal check is Mongolia. I was interested in teaching in that area.

My experience with the police/criminal check done in the U.S. is this: the FBI gave me the runaround until someone gave me the phone number of an office in Virginia. I called and was told that the such requests are answered by phone on Thursdays. The agent to whom I spoke wasn't very helpful or cooperative (sort of like dealing with the SAFEA except that at least SOMEONE spoke English). The local police department wasn't interested in issuing anything unless I had a rap sheet on file. (I have NO criminal record--- not even a parking ticket).

I follow the job forums and I subscribe to a publication that fills my mailbox up with job listings available throughout China. VERY FEW schools request a criminal check. If you have a criminal record or if you are interested in a school that requests such a report, skip it.

A parking ticket is not the definition of criminal activity.... ugggg

Again, the law states - as recently stressed to FAO's, the law does not allow it. "Exceptions" are not the law. Follow the law.

Quote:
crime
noun \ˈkrīm\
Definition of CRIME
1
: an act or the commission of an act that is forbidden or the omission of a duty that is commanded by a public law and that makes the offender liable to punishment by that law; especially : a gross violation of law
2
: a grave offense especially against morality

Like or not parking illegally is a crime, and in most cases does go on your record.

To the OP, I have never heard of such a thing. I don't think you will be finding any confirmation of the background check. Depending on the school, you might end up having to go to your home country, but most places can get you a trip to a nearby country.

I have seen some of the Korean schools working in China do this. Be aware (as none of these schools are) FBI checks , although apparently the is some question if the FBI still offers them, take between 3-16 weeks. Sometimes I think that some of these school don't realize for the salaries and headaches hey offer the good teachers will just...well ....not come

Give me a break. CRIMINAL records DO NOT include parking tickets, speeding tickets, and others. Traffic violations are considered a third type of "crime." Felony, misdemeanor, and more.

Amazing...

They are on your record until you settle them.

Misdemeanor: A crime, less serious than a felony, punishable by no more than one year in jail. Petty theft (of articles worth less than a certain amount), first-time drunk driving and leaving the scene of an accident are all common misdemeanors. - Black's Law Dictionary

Well, my point was twofold. I told the OP that I had never heard of any such policy. I think it is probably just a rumor. Second, I wanted to stress that traffic tickets are and will be on one's criminal record until they are settled.

Get a traffic ticket a week before you come to China and don't settle it. Stay in China a year, then get a criminal check for another country. See what happens.

I realize we are getting way off topic, but the trolliness of it drew me in.

They will let you change such visas in Jiangsu. Been there, done that.
