I think it may be so small that decently plentiful jobs may be lacking, though I'd prefer it to KL or Johor or Penang due to its laid back family atmosphere, as Im married, in my late 40s, have a stepdaughter aged 10, and need a non-tourist, non-glitzy, non-bar/strip club atmosphere for the long haul.

I also read-to my disbelief-that a cheap place by the beach can be rnted for $150 USD/month????!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WTF???

I live in Kuantan. Been here for 11 years. What do you want to know?

PM if you want a private chat. Otherwise, the whole world will see how wonderful Kuantan can be.

Kuantan is nice. Very mellow, good food, couple of malls with cinema, decent stretches of beach nearby.

Here is a list of the universities and colleges with either a main campus or a branch campus in Kuantan.

Universiti Malaysia Pahang
Medical Campus of Islamic International University
Universiti Institut Teknologi MARA (UiTM) branch campus
IKIP International College (under Yayasan Pahang)
Kolej Islam Sultan Abdul Shah (KIPSAS)
Mahad Tahfiz (Islamic school under Yayasan Pahang)
Shahputra College
Kolej Polytech MARA
MARA Professional College (really, high-school level, college-prep)
Olympia College, branch campus
Cosmopoint College, branch campus
Kuantan Pacific College (nurse training)
Kolej PSDC
Polisas - Polytech College, Sultan Abdul Shah
MARA Junior College (MRSM, I forget the full name, but it is a high-school, college-prep school)
Kolej Komuniti (two of them, one in Kuantan, one just outside)
Kolej Matrikulasi Gambang (a post-high school, matriculation school for Malays who do not want to do STPM)

Am I missing any?

Yeah, houses rent in the US$100-300 range. On the beach? I haven't seen too many on the beach since the beach is reserved land; a house must be above high tide and storm surge heights. But there are housing areas within a 2- to 5-minute walk of the beach. I live 5 minutes from a beach.

What else do you want to know?
