|

Quick question: I live in a Leopalace, which is a company apartment. When I replaced the other foreign teacher, we made a deal and I paid for many of the things in the place, like the TV, which the previous teacher (before the one I replaced) bought, bed, dishes, etc. I'm leaving the company in May. So what do I have the right to take with me? I'm staying in Japan, but am going to a company that doesn't supply furnished housing like my current one, so what am I able to take with me? Any thoughts? Many thanks. |

Anything that was bought by you or other teachers is yours to take.
Anything that the company provided stays (unless it was something that they gave you, like a futon) |

Ok, I just feel like if I tell them I'm taking all this stuff they'll be all pissed off. I don't want to screw over the next teacher, but I also want to keep what I paid for. This company has already dicked me over about the apartment though, so I'm really not too upset about them. I'm just worried about when the end- of- contract inspection thing comes and there's a bunch of stuff gone...
Thanks for the input Wayne! |

Another semi-related question: My place is pretty old, and the shower always backs up on me. I've been dealing with it since I moved in last May, and I clean the drain every day. But it has been getting worse recently, so I finally told my manager. They made some calls at honbu, and it turns out that if they come out to fix it and they think it's my fault, like I have too much hair or something, then I have to pay for it. I feel this is bullsh*t. If there's a problem, the landlord should fix it, true? It's getting so bad I have to take 5 minute showers or else the water floods into the hallway. Warmer weather is on the way, I'm going to need to start shaving my legs closely again. I need more than 5 minutes. But, I only have a few months left. I don't want to pay for anything in this place. Is it worth the risk?
Thanks! |

You know... if your Leopalace is like mine, you can unscrew the plug thing that the water goes into and scoop out any hair that's blocking it. It's disgusting but it might solve the problem. Also you can buy drain-unclogging bleach that you pour down, wait for a while and then chase it with very hot water... might be worth a try! Unfortunately it seems a bit discriminatory against the hairy foreigners (I swear that Asian people have hardly any body hair!), but yeah, if they think that it's our fault, we have to pay for it. I suppose that the same would happen in any rented place, though?
As for what you can keep. Leopalaces generally come "furnished" with two chairs, a table, a TV, a microwave... everything else you'd have to buy (futons, other chairs, pots and pans, decorations) so - if you have paid for them - they should be yours. It's probably worth asking your school this, though... |

How do you figure?
I used to live in a shared house with 3 long-haired Japanese woman, and it only took one of them to have a shower to block the plughole- forget body hair, just the (very thick) hair on their heads was plenty drain- blocking just by itself. My husband's hair is the main culprit in blocking our sink and shower drains as well- generalising here but Asian hair tends to be a lot coarser than caucasian hair, and a look at the drains at any gym showers or onsen will confirm that it gets into the plugholes in a big way.
Just incidentally, did you know that a lot of Japanese women shave their arms (and sometimes faces) as well as their legs? While men here do tend to be less hairy than western men on average, Japanese people can actually be quite hairy, they just tend to remove a lot of it. I know guys here who shave their legs as well.
I do agree though that if she hasn't already, LadyK probably needs to have a closer look at that drain. Most showers have a removable cover on the plughole because of this very issue- I have to clear ours a couple of times a month at least, and even if it doesn't have a cover that can be removed you can buy products in the supermarket that will clear hair-related blockages. |

Luckily I used "seems" to avoid saying anything too misinformed... but thank you for enlightening me! I didn't realise that some Japanese guys shaved their legs... I can't say I'm TOO surprised, though.. it certainly makes a lot more sense now! |

Find some drain cleaner, and just dumb 2 or 3 liters in it. Won't damage the pipes right away, but will reduce the life of them. But if they aren't worried about that, than neither should you. |

Mine was the same. I'm not particularly hairy but I shed like a husky in spring when I wash hair so had to unscrew the top drain to pull out hair on quite a few occasions.
Even if you can't see a blockage and it's digusting to do, it's worth having a feel into the outlet. My plug hole was huge but the pipe leading out was really narrow so my hair would normally get stuck just as it flowed out but it was nothing that couldn't be retrieved with a disposable chopstick though... just be careful not to push anything in deeper.
If you use a drain unclogging fluids don't be tempted to leave it unwashed out for longer for good measure. Leopalace places are built really cheaply (I found out on more than one occasion) and really easy to damage. |

I had this problem. I took off the drain lid and there was still water in it, so I removed the mesh net thing and there was something huge and solid in there. Fearing the worst, I got a wire clothes hanger and hooked it, pulled it out, and it was a clump of black hair the size of a volleyball
Being blonde I knew that wasn't my problem. There were also used bandaids stuck down there. Wtf. |
