Looking at pictures on different Indonesian language school websites, I would guess the expected male attire is long sleeve dress shirt, tie, and slacks. Is this correct?

I have never worn a tie at school but some may insist on it. Best thing to do is get some batik shirts, you can get some nice inexpensive cotton shirts from Batik Keris that will keep you nice and cool. Trousers and shoes are a must usually.

I agree. Every school I have worked at has insisted I wear trousers when teaching.

Same. We have a hanger for our trousers behind the staffroom door for this very reason. Nice to put the feet up and let the boys breathe after a grueling lesson.

lol, the pants jokes are funny. But seriously, thank you all for the information. I am getting a pretty good idea of the dress code. Are long sleeve dress shirts preferred?

Short sleeved shirts were okay for the guys at my school. But yes, male dress codes do tend to be pretty strict from what I've seen.

at our school, you were able to wear short sleeved dress shirts...
some of the guys wore t'shirts on Fridays, the management didnt really care. Ties were never a must.

the only place i've seen a tie worn is in the admin office of an international school.

i'd say the standard ESL dress code is pants, shoes, and a collared shirt. short-sleeve polos are the norm.

The last two nat plus (now international) schools that I have worked at insisted on a tie, although they both allowed short-sleeved shirts.

One of them had casual Fridays, and one did not.

I don't think there's a standard answer to this one, it all depends on the DOS, school manager, owner or whoever's responsible for implementing things such as dress codes. Some TBIs, for example, insist on males wearing ties whilst others don't bother. Many schools will have dress-down or casual Fridays, but, again, there will be guidelines as to what you can and can't wear. Personally, I'd be happy to wear polo shirts or t-shirts with the school's logo on every day. If uniformity is the aim of dress codes then I think this is the best solution because, let's face it, I'm sure we've all witnessed some pretty gruesome shirt/tie combos at work in the past!

overall i would say that women have a less strict dress code. i have seen them wearning sandals, tennis shows, jeans, shorts, casual shirts, short/no sleeve shirts and the like. Not sure if this is acrosss the board at all schools, but it seems to have always been that way at every school i have woroked at whether it was a language mill, nationalplus or international school. at my current school, men have to wear slacks, dress shirt (long or short sleeved) and a tie everyday. women dont have any dreess code. i have seen women in torn jeans with midrift showing. go figure
