|

Has anyone heard about a murder at SDT in Riyadh? Rumour has it that an American went ballistic and killed one of his colleagues in a drunken rage. He was then arrested and is now in a Saudi jail.
Anyone substantiate or refute this rumour? It would be good if anyone could simply shed some light on this.

I know this is no joking matter, but I can't help but think that Sarah Palin could help us "refudiate " this in a matter of minutes |

She might, but sadly I can't.
As I understand it a teacher did a runner to Bahrain. When his apartment was checked they found the dead body of a colleague there.
At the time I heard (early last week) there was an idea that the deceased might have had died from natural causes, but the consensus was that he had been killed and that that alcohol was involved. The teacher in question was arrested in Bahrain and brought back to KSA. Both parties were from the US and had been friends.
I don't know very much more, but notice that SDT's recruiter is now trying to fill those posts. |

Umm...I heard it was in a well-known hotel. (PM me for name.)

I can't confirm or deny this but alcohol was involved and I do know that the deceased may have had a heart condition and that he was no spring chicken.

No, I heard he was arrested on the Saudi side and that both parties were from the UK. Yes, both were previously friends. PM if you want the names I have.

That more or less mirrors what I heard, including the heart issue.
Except for the dead man being found in the place the guy who ran away lived in (maybe it was a hotel rather than a compound) and that he was American. I heard the American thing from two very different types of source, both 'inside'. Neither mentioned the dead man's nationality - so he could in fact be British.
The consensus was that the other party would be deported back to the US.
A sad story - shows that alcohol and Saudi Arabia don't mix well at all. |

So... one article says that the man was shot... and the other says he was apparently beaten to death.
Sad either way... and especially the fact that they are thus far unable to locate any family.

Yes, the truth is coming out in dribs and drabs...but then there are other stories about expats making headlines too, so "watch this space" as they say!

From what I hear, no firearms were involved and it was drunken brawl that got out of hand. The alleged killer also had a background in violence or at least aggressive behaviour towards colleagues.

Wow. I posted this on the General ME board as KSA board is blocked for those in Kingdom. But the thread link pasted by Mr K has led me here.
The quote from The Sun is pertinent in this case: 'He remembers nothing about the night', and a source said, "The problem with the home-made hooch drunk by expats is it's still fermenting when you drink it. You can go completely doolally on it." |
