I am looking for an inexpensive distance masters course in TESOL or Applied Linguistics, that takes candidates without teaching experience.
The only one I found is University of York MA in Teaching English to Young Learners, but the fee there is 9000 GBP, which is kind of expensive.
Are there other respected courses with lower fees, any English speaking country? Bachelor courses are also welcome.
Thank you! |

If you don't have an undergrad AND you have no experience then you have a long way to go
AND
getting into a MA program without one or the other is not likely to happen except at a paper mill (buy your degree for a few hundred quid - looks pretty but won't get you an interview).
Celta followed by some classroom time followed by a Delta would get you a lot of the way there if you were looking at making a bit of a career out of it. You can cram this into about 4-12 months of very hard work.
The open university is also an option for your undergrad and that takes away a lot of your problems (the degree gets you a visa and work permits in most places and goes a long way toward actually getting an interview as well.)
.

Australia has some pretty decent ones. I'm going through Deakin and the fees are about $2000 per course and you have to take 8 courses.
The UK has Open University, which seems affordable and flexible.
EDIT: BUt if you don't have a BA either, that'll make it harder to get into MA courses. |

| I don't know of any reputable MA programme that accepts students without some reasonable teaching experience. |

| The OU doesnt have a TEFL or applied linguistics MA. And you must have a BA hons to get onto their programs. They are a lot cheaper than the others discussed though...I think an MA is about 3000. |

If you have related life experience, on the job training, etc, that MIGHT help, or BA level courses in the subject you want to teach, that also MIGHT help. Best thing to do would do contact universities directly.

But you went through them, correct? Which degrees did you end up with? |

Indeed I did NG. I am now allowed to put the letters BA (open) DIP ELS (open) after my name now
The letters look nice, but the degree is probably the lowest of the low. It isnt a 'named' degree, hence the 'open' part. Apparently this is the most popular undergraduate degree they award. Its modular and so you can pick and choose the subjects you study. You just have to earn a set amount of points at certain levels of academic study.
I opted for a simple degree without honours. Its a quicker option, and should satisfy the visa requirements of most countries. Unless I top it up to an honours degree, they wont let me go on and do an MA.
I have just been looking at their website again...they offer an MA in Education with a focus on applied linguistics. Might be of interest? |
