TOKYO Japan was struck by a magnitude 8.9 earthquake off its northeastern coast Friday, unleashing a 13-foot (4-meter) tsunami that washed away cars and tore away buildings along the coast near the epicenter. There were reports of injuries in Tokyo.

In various locations along Japan's coast, TV footage showed massive damage from the tsunami, with dozens of cars, boats and even buildings being carried along by waters. A large ship swept away by the tsunami rammed directly into a breakwater in Kesennuma city in Miyagi prefecture, according to footage on public broadcaster NHK.

Officials were trying to assess damage, injuries and deaths from the quake but had no immediate details.

The quake that struck at 2:46 p.m. was followed by a series of powerful aftershocks, including a 7.4-magnitude one about 30 minutes later. The U.S. Geological Survey upgraded the strength of the first quake to a magnitude 8.9, while Japan's meteorological agency measured it at 7.9.

I am in Tokyo, it was pretty crazy but watching the news it was even worse that I thought at first, I just casually got out of the building (I am used to quakes in California) but this one just kept going. I am seeing on the news that parts of the coast are flooded and there are fires in the city. Cell phones are not working and trains are stopped. Aftershocks about every 2 minutes still.

It's now being reported as an 8.9.

Sendai was hit by a 10 meter tsunami. The pictures on TV are terrifying.

the early videos coming out of Japan are nuts
anyone on the ground let me know when the cell phone networks are back up, I'd like to contact some friends I have in the North of Japan where I hear they got it the worst.

Stay off the phones! Geez. Let emergency calls get made first. Send an email and wait.

A sad and shocking day. Sad

The tsunami threatens to engulf neighboring countries like the Philippines. Even Hawaii is at risk.

Let's hope and pray that this disaster will not be a repeat of the 2004 Asian Tsunami which killed thousands.

I second this. Please stay off the phone unless it is necessary. Make sure you make contact with your workplace when it is safe to do so. Confusion occurs when you or anyone you know is not accounted for.
