Anyone else in Indonesia aware if their ISP is now blocking certain websites? Specifically, all sites related to "pornography, gambling and phising/malware." I'm with Telkom and noticed this for the first time yesterday.

Does this mean the curtains will no longer be drawn at warnets around this fine nation?

Yup, mine has now blocked a website I'd previously visited without a problem, an erotic stories one. If I want to read an erotic story once in a while, what's the big deal anyway? :-s lol heigh ho.

I have just noticed these banned sites are still accessible through numerous and free web proxy sites. So they've banned the sites, but haven't banned the web proxy's to access them.

What's a web proxy when it's at home? I mean, I've heard the word but never known quite what it refers to...

A web proxy is a site which acts as an intermediary. So when you type in the URL of a site, it never connects to that URL, but instead connects to the proxy server and asks it to get the URL for you.

It's actually very simple. Just type in the address for the web proxy. On the proxy site will be a bar similar to a google search bar. Just type the URL of the blocked website into this bar and it will send you there.

A couple of free ones include:

www.hidemyass.com
www.runfreeproxy.com

It seems that you won't be able to go to the cinema soon to watch porn----err...... I mean mainstream films due to an new tax being levied on imported films. A Hollywood boycott may soon ensue.

The banning laws here are a JOKE!

First, they claim a moral victory, a few months ago, for successfully blocking 3 million porn sites, not knowing that that does not even make up for %5 of the porn sites available on the internet.

The fact of the matter is, if a person here wants to view porn, they will view porn. Whether it be through an accessible website or a pirated DVD, it is as easy as ordering Nasi Goreng.

Secondly, the censorship of movies. This is ridiculous as well. I remember coming here with 300 dvds and upon arrival in Jakarta I had fill out a declaration card. On it they asked if I have any movies on me that they would have to check and sensor. I checked YES and the immigration officer didn't even give me, or the card a second look. Besides, I can get the same films, uncensored at the local Mall for Rp.10,000 so what is the freaking point!?

Last, if they tax films that will be a joke as well. Hollywood has bigger problems to contend with so I doubt there will be a response to this foolishness. Besides, why go to Cinema 21 when I can buy 4 DVD's from the pirate for the same price?

The banning of porn sites should see an increase in brothel patronage throughout Indonesia. Maybe this is the plan?

I've never been able to access skybet.com over here, which is a little annoying as I miss putting my 50p each way on an outsider in The Grand National.

skybet might be blocked but none of the other major bookmakers are.... so you are free to gamble 50p's to your hearts content... Cool
