Hi! I'm planning to spend a month in or near Chiang Mai in November... and am wondering what type of job or volunteer opportunities are available.. (for free!) I've been teaching ESL for over 2 years and would love to do some volunteer teaching or English tutoring.
Also, is it possible to rent a room or place for about a month and what would this cost?
Thanks for your help. |

There are plenty of volunteer works available in Chiangmai. The one that would really interest me is teaching English at village schools. Once you join one of these programs you will also be offered a city trip. People there are very nice and they will treat you quite well.
This is a way to reach the core culture of northern Thailand, both in the city and the remote area.

That looks great! Thanks for the info. Is it free? I don't have enough $$$ to pay to do volunteer work! |

Unfortunately it's not for free, sorry. The price is $615 for one-week program. I'm quite stupefied when people try to make business out of volunteer works.
For your alternative, the Language Institute of Chiangmai University has established International Job Placement Program, for which they recruit teachers with TEFL Certificate and send them to schools and other educational institutes. I guess it is free to join the program. However, their website is not informative and I couldn't access the English version. You may call them on (053) 943751-3 (Thailand country code is 66) or send email to [email protected] for details.
Hope this helps. |

$615 for 1 week is not trying to make a business. It is robbing people blind. Often there are overhead costs involved with running a volunteer operation that need to be covered, but $600/week in Thailand is equal to theft IMHO.
I dont know the Chiang Mai volunteer circuit, but am sure you could find a place to volunteer without having to pay (at least not 20,000 baht for one week). However, realize that the reason that many school dont like 2 week/1 month volunteers is that it is unfair to the students. There is no consistency and it can be disruptive to the school. Try looking into orphanages or refugees.

Of course. Probably can find a room for as low as 2-3000 a month at a guesthouse, but I would guess a couple more thousand would offer a much nicer place. |
