| so I'm getting my paperwork in order and went to a Notary Public to get my criminal background check ( a letter from my state's Justice Department) and my TESOL diploma notarized. Well I originally thought that the notary would stamp the documents that I brought in. But he refused. He made black and white photocopies of my documents and then stamped and signed the photocopies. Are these photocopied forms now considered the notarized documents and now I must send them to the secretary of state? I thought original notarized documents meant the original documents getting notarized, not photocopies. In fact, I remember reading from some language schools that wants original documents, not photocopies. Any ideas? |

The copies are what you send to the secretary of state for an apositlle.
The apostille is a separate piece of paper that will be attached. Do not detach them.
They typically do NOT deface original documents.

so... its not okay to photocopy the photocopied notarized versions?
so the whole point of this authentication... is not really to authenticate if the original diploma is real or not... its to authenticate the Notary signature is real based on my word?? How easy is that to forge a TESOL certificate and just say that its legit? My TESOL certificate looks like I could have made it myself!! lol
and if I will be out of the country before my university diploma will arrive, how can I appoint someone to sign and swear when I bring my diploma to a notary? |

The notary is certifying that he has inspected the original document and that it is real. He then notarizes the copy and then that is apostilled.
The notary's signature is not just based on your word thus the stamp of the notary.
Or do you mean slipping a forgery past a notary? That is their responsibility, they are the ones putting the stamp and signing that something is real. |

That's the norm. They can only notarise ORIGINAL docs in cases like birth, death, marriage certs and degrees.
The copies should now be sent to the Sec of State, then you're good to go. If they want original docs, just show them the originals, no notarisation, apostillisation necessary. |

Easy as pie to forge a cert. The notarisation process JUST proves that the COPY is the same as the ORIGINAL. It doesn't prove that the original is legit. The Sec of State just signs off to say that the notary public is still registered with the state.
Be forewarned, using forged docs is never advised. Sooner or later you'll get caught.
For your degree, you don't have to go. Anyone can go. As long as they have the original. They just make copies and visit the notary public. My mom has taken many of my docs to the bank to get notarised without my consent, I mean, I didn't have to give her consent. |

Great, thanks for your help.
The Notary guy told me that I had to be there... and rightfully so, he made me sign an additional sheet with his name, my name, the date, my signature,e tc that he attached to my documents to be mailed off. |

Anyone can swear that it's a true copy, not just you. Think about death certs, the person whose name is on it can't be there, now can they? |
