Hey,

My hubby and I have got a dream teaching job in Takayama, in the Japanese Alps. We have our visas and our flights are booked for the 17th of April. We have been looking forward to this for months.

We really cant believe what has happened with the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear plants. Colleagues in Japan have said that the news is sensationalizing it alot and that we would still be safe to come.

Whats other teachers opinions? Would like to hear from other teachers who are in Japan now.

1. A lot can happen in a month, either for good or bad.

2. Look at a map. See where Takayama is compared to the current disaster area. Decide whether you will immediately be affected by what has happened there.

3. Forget whether news is "sensationalizing" anything. Of course they will! It's been 5 days since the initial quake, and normal TV programming has only just come back a bit (as far as I know, mostly to relieve the anxiety of everyone watching, especially kids, and to minimize post traumatic stress syndrome). News sells, though, and words like meltdown, explosion, and radiation attract people's attention. Reports of people in affected areas not getting food, water, heat, gasoline, heating oil, medicine, etc. are becoming more and more common today. What should be coming soon to [u]really[/y] "sensationalize" things is the occasional report of amazing rescues, survivors found after all this time, families that have been brought together despite enormous odds, heroes and heroines, etc.

Sorry for a bit of rambling there. Just imagine the situation happening in your own homeland. What would you tell someone asking the same question?

I'm going to Japan March 27th for my job training. I have very high hopes (from talking to friends, other teachers, forums, and the company I will work for) that things will be fine. My company's job training may change location because it was supposed to be in Shirakawa, Fukushima, but it is still to be held at the same time as before.

I always say that reporters will do ANYTHING for a story and I strongly believe that. They word things in the most dramatic way possible to convey fear and worry in people's hearts and minds. This is just to get people attention and make them listen. (In my opinion).

In a month's time, you and your husband should be totally fine to go and live in Japan and work your dream job.
