I am a licensed lawyer from the USA and also have a MA in app. linguistics with about 12 years of teaching experience - mostly ESL/ESP but some law school courses also. Prior to 12 years ago I practiced law in the USA.

By the way, I taught ESP in the Emirates about 10 years ago for a couple of years and am considering working there once again. Do any of you know of any foreign lawyers who have been able to find work teaching law courses (non-Shariah) anywhere in the Gulf?

I am particularly interested in Dubai, but would seriously consider other areas. I would also be interested in work as a foreign legal consultant (for a law firm or a company), insurance claims adjuster, etc.

I would guess that UAEU is the only university doing a law degree. (AUS doesn't list one) The reality is that a law degree is very low on the totem pole in the Arab world - in fact the bottom. At the university, it is for those who didn't have the grades to get into education... or agriculture.

The only person with a law degree that I knew in the ME taught general EFL in the Gulf, but got a job in Hong Kong teaching ESP with their law program.

LOL, the last thing that they want is for Emiratis, especially the women, to learn non-Sharia law. With a JD, you can teach both graduate and undergraduate business courses, though. Contrary to what you might read elsewhere here, a JD will take you farther than an ESL degree in higher ed. Smile
