A teacher did a runner recently here. Not a surprise as he was the 5th (!!!!) to quit or run since the beginning of the school year.
His buddy was called into a meeting with the headmaster yesterday and the buddy told us the school was angry that he left with no notice.
The school plans to notify the UK embassy about this teacher doing a midnight runner.
Of course this is an idle threat because I can't believe for a minute that the British embassy would care at all that one of their citizens split from a shitty school such as this.
So I should ask you, does a threat like this have any substance at all with a foreign government? I can just imagine this scenario: : "Sir we must interrupt the briefing of the allied attack on Libya to tell you that one of our citizens just pulled a midnight runner from a college in Suzhou, China..."
Why would they even make such a useless idle threat?

Doing a "Midnight Run" is a breach of contract and can only be dealt with through legal action.
Even if this school were to approach the embassy which I do not believe they would in a million years, the reply that they would get is to take legal action against the teacher which, of course, they wouldn't.
The same applies for foreign teachers that turn to the embassy for help in matters to do with pay, accommodation etc. The most that the embassy can do is recommend a lawyer that may be able to help you. |

That part is very obvious. If, as you say, so many FT's have pulled runners, it is a lame, desperate attempt to hang onto the remaining teachers by adopting threats rather than corrective action related to whatever it is that is causing the problem. |

Bah humbug. A completely useless display of ignorance on the part of the headmaster.
You want to give an FT a Real Threat? Threaten to hold English Corners in the school FTs favorite nighttime hangout.
Every single day, for a month after someone does the midnight run.
That will send chills up the spine.
Cheers. |

It'll do the trick, but sounds like punishment from a concentration camp. |

But that's not really a threat, is it? It's just something they are going to do. |

PLANS is most probably the operative word
Same as a class plans / promises to do homework

Then why broadcast this "plan" except for the goal of intimidating current teachers? It was intended as a threat, certainly.
That it is a toothless threat spouted by a paper tiger of an administrator makes it no less than what it was intended.
I hope the Embassy has such calls routed to an offshore call center of non English speakers who can only recites from a script designed to assist those assembling a gas fired outdoor barbecue. |
