|
|
Hi,
I have seen some job posting for Fun Language International, Ltd. both on here, and Ajarn. There are two locations, one in Bangkok, and one in Lopburi. They have a website, email adresses, phone numbers, and come up on google maps. I have called them via skype and spoke with someone briefly about where to email my resume. So, I imagine they are legit.
However, when sending my resume I did note that I would wait to send my passport, and other sensitive information until speaking with them further; I am always worried about sending scans of documents like that! Is anyone else concerned about this, when employers ask for document scans straight away? How do you ensure security of personal information?
Also, I was just wondering if anyone has any information on Fun Language. Any experiences to share, things you have heard, etc?
Thank you! |

It is a non-issue for the most part.
Many (most?) employers and/or administrators (myself included) will bin an application if the passport scan isn't quickly forthcoming.
When I am going through resumes or applications the things I want to know (and see within 1 or 2-emails) are:
i) Resume with academic and work history and a brief cover letter.
ii) Where are you from / country of citizenship? Are you ready to travel (passport covers both).
iii) Are you qualified for the work visa and/or permits (degree scan).
iv) Do you have a clean criminal record? (CBC scan).
If you send a resume I will take a quick look at it when I get it (cursory glance) and if there is something there that gets my attention I may e-mail you back.
If your application is complete (resume, cover letter, passport scan, degree scan and CBC scan) then I know you are ready to go and will give your application serious consideration.
I get, on average, about 50 resumes per week from applicants. Of those, only about 3 are ready to go. The rest are 2-6 months away from having their paperwork complete or are not able to obtain the visa and work permit (lack of documents) and I won't waste any time on them; file 13.

Hi,
Thank you for your response! Are you just speaking in general as an employer, or are you connected to Fun Language International? I really appreciate your feedback, it's helpful hearing someone's opinion who is dealing with applicants on a regular basis. Although I am a bit nervous sending my scan of a passport, it did cross my mind that some hiring managers may not give my application the time of day, if I didn't include it. I don't want that to happen, but I do want to be sure I am sending my information to reputable school's/companies. Is there a resource that can help me determine this, when navigating all the job posting online?
I sent Fun Language my cv, resume, photo, and scan of my degree. The only other item they asked for was my passport, and I asked if I could send that after speaking with them further. So, would you recommend I send it now, before hearing back from them? They didn't request a CBC scan, however that is something I am happy to provide upon request.
Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks! |

I posted in general as someone who makes the determination to hire a new teacher and is required to review resumes / job applications.
I am NOT affiliated in any way with Fun Language International.
When applying directly to a school, language academy or via a recruiter for a job abroad it is customary to send a scan of your passport as part of the package.
I would NOT recommend posting a scan of it on-line (say the job wanted / post your resume section of any board or forum that is open to the public.

Okay, thank you for your suggestions. If you have time to answer another inquiry; I was wondering what is considered a reasonable range of teaching hours, as requested by a potential employer? I have seen requirements listing anywhere from 15-25 teaching hours. Most of them closer to 25 hours. If have seen some people say on other chat boards and posts that 25 is too much. What are your thoughts? |

In the majority of language academies you will be asked to teach from 22-30 classes per week. Language for profit.
In a k-12 school you will usually be asked to teach 20-24 classes per week.
IF you qualify to teach in a university you will be asked to teach from 12-15 classes per week.
How much is too much?
I work a 40 hour week. If I am in class for 25 hours then they only have 15 hours for everything else. Prioritize and what doesn't get done, doesn't get done. I don't take work home with me.
Typically, in a k-12 school you will typically balance class time and desk time (for prep and other tasks).
In a language academy they don't make money if you are not in the classroom so they skip on prep and maximize your time with the students in order to maximize profits.

I worked at fun language lopburi for more than a year and I have to say its a terrible company.
sure, they are legit nd yes, they will pay on time.
However, you are not teaching. you just play games, sing songs and chase children around with plastic hammers. The manager, bobby urron, will not pay you bonuses if he doesn't like you, even though you do a good job, and letters of reference are like a foreign concept to him unless you resign for a second year.
the company is run by greedy bullies who will do their best to make their workers feel like shit day after day.
if you are ready for a year of bullshit, go to fun language. |

I'm sure garybliss123 is telling the truth. Fun Language is always running an advertisement for more teachers and they really aren't all that busy to be doing so unless there is a very high turnover rate. Their pay is well below standard too!
'iv) Do you have a clean criminal record? (CBC scan). '
Yes, both in my home country and in Thailand, but no employer in Thailand has ever asked me for them! |

I worked in Lopburi and the pay was 10,000 higher than other schools there. Just be prepared to lose 3000 of your yearly bonus because a flood washed away your shoes and you couldn't get to a shop selling them before you started work at 8AM. |

Thanks for the information everyone.
How about Fun Language in Bangkok? Does anyone have information on them? As far as I understand it is only these two locations; are they frachises? |

They are all the same. You go out to various schools across BKK, often have to be in the office before 7.30am, to then take a taxi to the school you will be working at that day (different schools everyday).
Even if the school is near you, you still have to go to the office first.
You are chasing children around the classroom with a plastic hammer - enough said!!??
I really wouldn't take a job there. Trust me - I've done it! |
