I recently got an email from a recruiter telling me that with my 2year college diploma and tesol I could legally teach in Taiwan. Is this accurate??

Let's put it this way. He might have the connections to swing a work permit. It's Taiwan, and anything is possible. But in point of fact it would not be legal. Legal is a four year degree from an accredited institution.

Four year degree or its equivalent (there are more than a few of us here with three year degrees.

Actually at one time not long ago, say within the last six months, it was legal to teach here in Taiwan with a diploma and TESOL. I know because that is exactly what I have (plus two years prior exp.).

However, I have since learned that it is, or was, a county by county thing. Meaning you needed a BA or higher in some counties, and a diploma/TESOL in a few others. The person who originally hired me sent me to Tainan County, and I was hired with the above credentials.

I finally settled in Chiayi County, right next to Tainan County. I was hired by a respected school with only a diploma and TESOL. I have an ARC, Health insurance, multiple entry visa....the whole nine yards. I am completely legal and my employer did not need "connections" to hire me.

Having said all that, Chiayi County now requires a BA or higher. Having got in before the law was passed, I can renew my contract and retain my ARC as long as I stay at the same school.

The recruiter who is saying that it's okay might know of a county in Taiwan that still accepts diploma/TESOL.

We have debated this topic before on this board and there are still some non believers out there and I understand why, given the above info. Because the law was different in all counties, perhaps some school owners convinced otherwise intellingent people that all of Taiwan required a BA or higher, so I can understand why some people would argue this point.

Like I said, it's Taiwan, and anything can happen.

They are not. Get your BA and come over. It's stupid, from any angle, not to finish your degree.
