University of Nizwa - student protests & mass dismissals

The University of Nizwa should send every teacher who has left, been non-renewed or walked away in the last two years a letter of Apology for putting such a person in as the director of the IELP. Somehting like, "We're sorry we brought in such a person to run the program. We made a mistake. Please come back and work at the University of Nizwa. We now have someone who has an attention span of more than 30 seconds."

Before the current person came to power..... it was a place where you looked forward to coming to work because the University backed you up in more ways than one and the students were basically happy to be there, interested in learning and a pleasure to teach. Now...... it is a place where you would rather go to the Dentist than go to work. And you would choose a Dentist with NO pain killers.

Instead, I hear rumor that he may become the vice-chancellor.

This is sadly common in the world. Saw the same thing in the US in business...

In Gulf education this can be a benefit because they may no longer have any contact with teachers or ability to affect their daily job. Cool

True enough.

IF the fumbling, bumbling FI Director were to be emm.."promoted" out of his present position, at least his incompetancy would be effectually limited.

Sadly, that's a very big if..

Word on the circuit is that the UoN will not get through the 1st stage of the accreditation process, due mainly to the complaints coming out from the Foundation program.
Quite ironic, since the uni tried to brain-wash the staff with what-to-say QC items prior to the committee's visitation last month.

Amazing the damage one individual can do to an entire university in the space of a year..

Good luck to those leaving. You all deserve to be treated better!

Did you have weekly staff meetings with this 'fumbling, bumbling FI Director' in charge? I tell ya, it's these never ending, useless and unproductive meetings (dragging on into the night) that are the worst part any TEFL job in the Middle East! Pure agony!

The problems started the year before... and it merely dragged into this year... with various opinions of who is at blame. It sounds like, as is often true, there is plenty of blame to spread around... among teachers and management.

There are those who cause the problems and there are those who stoke the fire.

VS..(sigh!)

The same said fumbling Director was around the year before (he's nearing the end of his first 2 years)..

There is ONLY one person to blame for this utter disaster. Even if you wanted to blame "other" people, ironically they've all already gone:

24 instructors left UoN in the last 12 months (including 3 coordinators) with another 20 already scheduled to leave, one way or the other, within the next 4-6 months.

44 instructors departing a single faculty in 18 months?? (almost the entire number of instructors required to teach Foundation English by the way)

There is only one real problem at UoN and if the uni doesn't deal with him soon, it's only going to suffer seriously in the long run.

There is an expression for a former American president (I think either Truman or Eisenhower):

"The buck stops here."

A manager is responsible for what happens on his (or her) watch. Faculty who are causing problems? It is the manager's responsibility to manage. If a department is out of control, the manager has failed. Full stop.

May be a funny idea to you, but it might be a good idea for the Gulf. U NIzwa has a huge problem on their hands. I'm not ethnocentrist enough to believe that somehow Arabs cannot learn how to manage. Sometimes what is needed is motivation. U Nizwa, and, it seems, a lot of other schools in Oman, certainly have the motivation at the moment.

Dear Isabel,

The problem is that while extrinsic motivation might sometimes work, there would seem to be (in my experience, at least) a significant dearth of intrinsic motivation (and instilling that can take generations to achieve.)

Touche. But extreme motivation can really speed up a learning curve. Besides, I have know a couple of good managers who were native born Arabs. The second in command of the language center comes to mind. Given some latitude and some more power, I believe he could and would clean house and set up a good program.
