I am currently teaching in China, where a one year contract with a university or government high school actually means a 10 month contract, from September to June. Even if you continue working there the following year you do not get paid for July and August.
I have been thinking about a move to Thailand and I have seen that most high schools and universities advertise 12 month contracts. Does this mean that you actually get paid 12 times, or is it like the Chinese deal?
Thanks in advance for your advice. |

I know that all the schools I am aware of (including the one I work at and the ones we are associated with) either give a 10 month contract or you get paid for the holidays (12 month contract). These are k-12 schools and/or business/vocational schools. I can't speak to university positions.
I wouldn't work for a school that had me under contract for the holidays and didn't pay for it.

Thanks for the reply.
Private language schools here are the same - you get 12 salaries per year, and about 20 days holiday which are paid.
Universities and high schools are different though. You get about 4-6 weeks vacation in the winter for Spring Festival, which are paid, and another 2 months in the summer, which are not paid.
So, if your monthly wage is 6000 RMB per month, in a year you get 60,000 RMB for 8-9 months of actual work.
This is why I like working for the government, because of all the free time. However, it does mean that you have to plan your budget to cover the empty time in the summer. Also, I am from the UK and my wife is from the US so we spend a lot on travel going to see the family every year.
So, what I was wondering is, if a government high school or university advertises a job at, say, 30,000 baht per month, does this translate to an annual payment of 300,000 baht, or 360,000 baht? I would like to know how much I could count on earning per entire year.
Sorry for the long and convoluted explanation.
Thanks again in advance for any further info. |

I know in our case (and the NETs at the local government school) get 12 payments so in the case of your example, 360,000 per year.
Before you sign a contract, I would suggest you actually ASK to confirm that you are paid during the holiday.
I DON'T know about university positions. They may or may not be the same.
