Haha, Toronto is definitely not a clean city. I never claimed it was
I just had the impression that all of Japan was the cleanest place EVER, so I was surprised when I heard Osaka wasn't all that clean. I'm sure it's a lot cleaner than Toronto!!! |
I think the problem is that you listen to too many people and believe all of them. I'd possible add in "And you don't have a clue about real life" (considering your completely irrational fear of radiation in the current situation) but that's maybe going too far.
Japan is a large country. It varies, just like the people. Just like anywhere. Blanket statements simply aren't helpful, much like blanket fears that are so generalized as to be useless for doing anything about - ie. radiation, again.
You really need to start discriminating in what you believe and be willing to experience something for yourself before judging it. That, after all, is going to be the only way you'll ever make it past the fears of yourself and that others drop on you and actually get out of your home town and see some of the world.
Hey, I hear that some Japanese don't speak English! Won't that make it Impossible To Live There?! |

Hmm.. G Cthulhu, I think it's a little harsh to say that I dont have a clue about real life.
Anyway, thanks for your feedback everyone |

Returning to this thread, it occurred to me that the OP started the thread on the 19th. The earthquake & tsunami happened on the 11th.
All the shyte that happened to Japan this month and the OP is worried that Osaka might not be "clean"?!
I'd say to the OP: Darlin', if you're worried whether or not some or another Japanese city might not be "clean", you might want to re-think any intention you have of coming to Japan to live. |

I read an article a few days ago ranking the world's top cleanest and uncleanest cities. I thought Osaka would be way up there, but it was actually tied in LAST PLACE.
I had an idea that all of Japan was SUPER clean? Am I wrong in thinking this? Isn't Japan a really clean country?
Is Tokyo the only clean city in Japan? Is Osaka actually dirty? Or... can someone shed some light?
Thank you!
(One reason why I picked Japan over any other country in Asia was the fact that it was REALLY clean!!!) |
International standards, Osaka is very clean.
But Japan standards, Osaka is....grungy. More 'lived-in' feel, a lot of foot traffic, etc. But it isn't dirty in say 99% of the rest of Asia where you'll have heaps of trash sitting around the peripheries of everything. Nothing like that whatsoever. |

| I've lived and taught in Thailand and if you really want to experience dirty and chaotic pollution, try doing a year in Bangkok. I've yet to visit a city in Japan that even comes close to the level of pollution, grit and dirt that those working in Thailand manage with on a day-to-day basis. So the post above asserting that Osaka, while perhaps grittier than other Japanese cities, is not all that dirty when compared with other cities in Asia is fairly true. |

| A city as large as Osaka is going to have its clean and dirty areas. Once you start getting south of Namba, the city gets dirtier and dirtier. Part of this might be because you are getting closer to the docks. But the southeastern part of the city is particularly nasty looking. The Imamiya/Shin Sekai area is a dump, and the Nagahara area in the far southeastern part of the city is even worse. I remember having to take the subway down there to get my bike, which was impounded down there. Man, Nagahara was a nasty-looking place. |
