Hi Guys,
I have an MA in International Relations and a CELTA, do you think I am in a position to bnegotiate my salary due to my MA even though it is not English Teaching related? Just got my contract from a Saudi company, wondering whether I should haggle them.
Any info would be helpful. |

In the past, some employers would give credit for a non-related MA, but these days, it doesn't seem to be true all that often. That said... why not politely give it a try? The worst that they can say is no.

I know of people with post grad degrees in international communication, who have been warmly welcomed as language instructors. Did your 'relations' degree include a strong foundation in communication skills? If so, you might play that up. |

Hmm... that could be something I could focus on. I guess communication is an integral part of the degree..
Thanks for the input guys. |

Firstly, thanks for the PM and hope you will be in touch again soon. Haggling really depends on the answer to the questions below:
(A) What is the name of the Saudi company that you have had an offer from?
(B) What is your marital status? Do you have kids?
(C) Are you going as part of a long term move or just a few years?
The reason I ask is because if you have familial responsibilities then a lower salary in a direct hire job with a university or school might be preferable, particularly if your children are of school going age.
If you are single then of course the base salary means more than any benefits that might be on offer. (even then be careful as some contractors only pay you for eight to nine months as opposed to twelve months)
Anyway hear from you soon,
