A good friend of mine back home sent this to me recently. She's one of those unfaltering optimists (bless her) who I find both endearing and baffling.
This is what the Dalai Lama has to say for 2004 (please bear with me)
Quote: |
GOOD KARMA
Instructions For Life
1. Take into account that great love and great achievements involve great risk.
2. When you lose, don't lose the lesson.
3. Follow the three R's:
Respect for self
Respect for others, and
Responsibility for all your actions
4. Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.
5. Learn the rules so you know how to break them properly.
6. Don't let a little dispute injure a great relationship.
7. When you realize you've made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.
8. Spend some time alone every day.
9. Open arms to change, but don't let go of your values.
10. Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.
11. Live a good, honourable life. Then when you get older and think back, you'll be able to enjoy it a second time.
12. A loving atmosphere in your home is the foundation for your life.
13. In disagreements with loved ones, deal only with the current situation. Don't bring up the past.
14. Share your knowledge. It's a way to achieve immortality.
15. Be gentle with the earth.
16. Once a year, go someplace you've never been before.
17. Remember that the best relationship is one in which your love for each other exceeds your need for each other.
18. Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it.
19. Approach love and cooking with reckless abandon. |
I couldn't resist revising this list:

GOOD KARMA
Pragmatic Instructions For Life (with apologies to the Dalai Lama)
1. Take into account that great drugs and great vacations involve great debt.
2. When you lose, blame someone else.
3. Follow the three R's:
Rationalization for self
Recrimination for others, and
Restrictive bonds for all S+M practices
4. Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful excuse to pursue litigation.
5. Learn the Bible so you know how to curse properly.
6. Don't let a little truth injure a great lie.
7. When you realize you've made a mistake, take immediate steps to shift the focus to something else.
8. Spend some time eavesdropping every day.
9. Open the door to the hydro guy, but don't let go of your towel.
10. Remember that medication is sometimes the only answer.
11. Use a good, dependable toothpaste. Then when you get older and eat a meal, you'll be able to chew your food.
12. A creaky headboard in your bedroom is the foundation for irate neighbours.
13. In disagreements with loved ones, never deal with the current situation. Just bring up the past.
14. Share your marijuana. It's a way to achieve popularity.
15. Be patient with the in-laws.
16. Once a year, take something you've never tried before.
17. Remember that the best relationship is one in which your lust for each other exceeds your hatred of one another.
18. Judge your sex life by what you had to give up in order to get it.
19. Approach U.S foreign policy with relentless objection.

Might get in trouble for that last one with some Yanks on this board, but oh, well.
Sent that back to my friend - didn't hear from her again. Hope she hasn't renounced me. |

Dear Richard,

Unlikely, I'd say. From what I've read, most of the Yanks on this board (including myself) would agree. But if Philolinguist or shadowfax should drop by, well, you'll likely get some static.
Regards,
John
P.S. By the way, if your friend has "renounced" you - well, who wants a friend who needs a sense of humor transplant, anyway? |

I also agree with #19. But then, I was told back in high school, during the first Persian Gulf War, to "love or it leave it." Uh, OK, I guess I've made my choice...

Denise,
I also look back with a special kind of feeling (fondness, wistfulness, pride, resignation, ??) on the "love it or leave it" phrase. |
