So I am thinking of coming to Vietnam for 6 months. My main reason for coming is to do an internship at an NGO in Hanoi. However the NGO doesnt pay and I dont have enough funds to live in country for 6 months. Is it possible to work at one of these so called "backpacker" schools part time whist I volunteer and make enough to fund my stay?
I have double degree and half a Masters, no CELTA... But I have one years teaching experience from Korea |
You'll be all right. If you look at the (now locked) "Does anyone have any experience with Apollo?" thread there is one infinitely wise individual who implies that if you don't have a CELTA, you will not be allowed inside a 200Km radius of Viet Nam's borders.......
UNLIKE MOST TAY NATIONS, Viet Nam is NOT a credential-based society!! Hell, you won't earn more than $10USD per hour in the United States unless you can show a University Degree! Doesn't matter if you have an I.Q. of 165 AND experience in the field - if you don't show the University Degree, you're not going to get the position.
In Viet Nam, however, it is NOT a credential-based society.....if YOU CAN DEMONSTRATE COMPETENCE and/or EXPERIENCE and can DISPLAY that you can teach, CERTIFICATES (NOT "qualifications") will become irrelevant in several schools, and you shouldn't have TOO much difficulty getting a teaching slot (though, to warn you, Ha Noi IS thee city with the highest cost of living in Viet Nam and your gig most likely will be part-time, but it's something)
I know a few people at NON-cowboy Centres who have less than a two-year college degree (one has a secondary school diploma only) and TEFL/CELTA/TESOL certificates....as well as several successful teachers who have Bachelor's or Master's Degrees and NO certification here......so I can't imagine a huge problem for you.
It may seem tiring at first, but get your name and your face out there.....you'll get something! |
