d,

I appreciate the sympathic response. But with the "kid" here with me inside (my little dog, like Toto in the Wizard of Oz) Arrow begging for morsels
AND
with the little munchkins, ghosts, goblins, etc. (some big ones too) roaming through the neighborhood Arrow begging for treats--It's not COMPLETELY boring! Laughing

Not to mention all the great reading material in the backlog of threads & posts. Some truly memorable ones Exclamation Cool

As for "where the real ESL action is" ... it's probably a much better idea to look at the total number of posts (and/or topics) per country on the main board. Statistically, this would reflect more accurately where most ESL teachers *really* are, or would like to be, in my humble opinion.

Kent,

While that may be a good start, I can't shake the impression that there are more EFL teachers in Japan than is evident by their presence on this board. (There are other boards out there in cyberworld devoted to EFL teachers in Japan only, and they have pretty good memberships.)

Also, I find it hard to believe that Korea has almost as many EFL teachers as the rest of the world combined (based on the traffic of their board.)

I'd expand your idea to include ALL the discissuion forums (and other sites) that you can find on the net. A country like Japan or Korea seem to have an active EFL community of expat teachers. Exaxtly how many we won't know.

That's not very scientific, but unless you're about to do a PhD thesis on EFL expat demographics, I'm not sure what else to suggest.

Edit:

Never mind. I didn't notice the age of your post . . . Given the OP's date of post, I have to change my answer to Japan . . . .Confused

Please remind us again why we need to keep voting on a thread that is now well over a year old. How, exactly, are you going to use this information?

For the record, I am still in Japan. I will refrain from casting a second vote so as not to invalidate the system.

Well, your poll is so old that my time in China is coming to an end. That means that my answer has changed twice since you created the poll.

This is a common phenomenon in the EFL world - people don't stay in one spot long. Much of the origional data from the poll is possibly out of date.

I'm in Turkey but I'm not sure which category it would fall into. I'm not on the European side, so I guess I can't say Europe (even though we are listed under Europe in the Job Info Journal). However, if I say the Middle East, my Turkish colleagues will rip my head off because they are NOT the same as those strange barbarians beyond our borders... Can I just say Mediterranean Region?

Well, I'm in Hawaii now, which doesn't seem to be covered by the poll. Sure, it's a state of the US but clearly not North America. Then again, it's not in Asia either. Polynesia isn't listed -- what do I do?! There's no "Other" or "None of the Above" category.

Then again, if things work out, I'm headed to Turkey in September -- see yaramaz's post for the complications that brings up. Hardly seems worth it to vote for a category I won't be in much longer.

Sorry, but this is just too complicated for me. I'm going back to writing my syllabus before I get a headache. Why don't we just let khmerhit keep voting for all of us?

If you voted before you won't be able to vote again. If the poll gives you an option to select a country, then you haven't voted yet.

As for me, I'm going back to Japan.

Hong Kong, which is to the south of nearly all of China is in North-east Asia but China is in central Asia. How's that?

Then of course, "Hong Kong is China's Hong Kong and Taiwan is China's Taiwan, there is only one China, you must understand this etc."
