|

Hi,
I know someone who does not have 2 years work experience teaching english after graduating with a BA Degree, and therefore can't get a z visa in Beijing or Shanghai. They also have a CELTA qualification. Without the 2 years, however, there appears no way to teach in Beijing or Shanghai.
What I want to know is:
1) Is this the case outside of Beijing or Shanghai?
2) Does it look like it will be rolled out for other major cities in China in the near future?
Many thanks. |

Unfortunately, no. This is not the case in my city. |

This is a new requirement and has been discussed for more than a year. MOST local authorities ARE REQUIRING the following new conditions:
Age 25 and older
TEFL type certificate (not obtained online)
2 years teaching experience
And it's about damn time! |

How will all of those credentials help a Dancing Monkey??
My school recently hired an older woman. I have 1k rmb that says she won't finish the semester. I'll go double or nothing on 2 weeks. |

Really? How do you know this? Are we talking about provinces with 1st tier, 2nd tier, and 3rd tier cities here?

But how is anyone supposed to get experience if they are not allowed to teach if they have none? It's not like the pay is any better in 3rd tier chinese cities than any other country - they're going to be shooting themselves in the feet with these kinds of rules, surely? |

^^^ I have heard the above, although its probably in the form of idle forum chant and hearsay in my example.
I did apply for Wall Street about a year ago and was excluded on the grounds of two years experience. The clincher is this two years experience MUST BE POST DEGREE, or so I was told. Although I have 5 years EFL experience, much of it is pre-degree so didnt count. I dont think I was being told a white lie because they didnt want me either (although that may have been the case).
Bottom line is like everything in China. There will always be places and employers who will accept less. Like bythebookie, I would like to see some standards enforced TBH. Id definitely like to see a BA+CELTA/Trinity as a minimum, although Id be less fussy on the two years experience rule myself. |

I think it's pure nonsense. Plenty of FTs working in my province (Liaoning) don't have two years experience. |

In Henan all you have to do is breath and make English-like sounds. |

Are you new to China? Have you been through the process before?
The skinny on it all is: They don't check authenticity of documents. Most of the time the school will fake the necessary documents if they need a teacher bad enough. Most employers or government offices wouldn't know what a real degree looks like.
I am not an advocate of being dishonest. I have the correct credentials and 7 years verifiable experience, granted you speak Albanian and want to call there to verify one of my schools and Polish for another.
I have also seen and heard of people faking the much talked about release/recommendation letter. It's a crazy world. |

I'd say Henan is a 4th tier province. |

Is it shameful that someone in any profession might be gaining experience? |
