|
|
Hi, I'm just looking for a bit of advice regarding a teaching post that I have been shortlisted for in Spain. The job is for a position in an English Academy teaching mainly children and the hours are 25hrs per week. The pay is apparently 1150 per month net.
I don't know much about the pay in Spain for teaching English but is this a good / bad / average offer? The job is in a small city in the north of Spain.
Can anyone give me any idea of pay and conditions in Spain at the moment? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! |

Would this be your first job? For an entry-level job, I'd say the hours and salary are average. You should also take into consideration living costs. Rent is normally considerably lower in smaller towns, effectively leaving you with more disposable income than you'd have in, say, Madrid or Barcelona. |

Thanks for the response! Well I am a teacher in Ireland and have 2 yrs experience but would be my first job abroad. I think I was expecting a bit more in terms of monthly wages...up on 1500 I thought but perhaps that was a bit optimistic. Yes, it's a small city and rent would be low enough...what would be the chances of doing extra teaching 1 to 1 outside of the job to make a bit of extra money do you reckon? |

Yes, 1500 is a little on the optimistic side for your first job in Spain.
It's normally possible to pick up privates but it takes time to find students and build a reputation. An additional consideration is that some schools don't approve of teachers doing private classes. If you're in the sort of place which is small enough for everyone to know everyone (so to speak), that could prove awkward. |

Ah, okay fair enough! Point taken, appreciate the tip
Well, my main question in that case would be, do you reckon that it would be hard to live on that salery every month, if say rent was around 300-350? That would leave about 800 to live on for month...what do you think? I'm pretty sure the cost of living in north of Spain is significantly lower than Ireland! |

I earnt what you did and paid that in rent. I was fine. This was in 2009 in a small town. Didn't take any privates. Lived a pretty good lifestyle, but did cook the majority of my meals. |

I agree with Insubordination. I don't think you'll have any problems living on 800 after rent. |

Thanks for that, that's interesting to know. Would love to go with the job, the only worry I have is that I would not earn enough but I suppose the only way of finding out is by trying! Thank you |
