I wrote directly to Kansai Gaidai about this and received the following response:
Quote: |
> 1) Does someone have to take the on-campus housing, or could
> they live off-campus? Would you subsidize the off-campus housing as
> well?
The positions advertised require that the instructor live in the university
housing adjacent to the campus.
> 2) Are there any exceptions to the five-year employment term limits?
Basically, no.
> 3) For faculty who live on campus, do the university gates close at a
> certain time, or can faculty come and go as they please?
The housing complex is adjacent to the campus. The gate is always open to the housing area (even when the campus is closed). |
The answer to #3 represents the only change from when I visited a friend there about four years ago. Note, again, that these answers also concur with the information in Kansai Gaidai's currently posted job ad (in the link I provided earlier in this thread).
Feel free to write for clarification yourself (now there's an idea... ). Again, I have nothing to do with Kansai Gaidai--I've only been relating what I've heard, not to mention what is written in their current job ads. Personally, if you've read both the ads and this thread and still want to apply to the position--unless you're just looking for that first, entry-level job just to get some university experience in Japan (in which case it might be fine...)--I'd question your sanity. Still, to each, his/her own. Good luck! |

A school administrator is going to tow-the-line with an official policy, even if the unofficial policy is quite different. I'm friends with a number of Kansai Gaidai teachers, and they tell me that they'll be renewed after their 5 years are up.
FYI - I don't think the on-campus compulsory housing was ever disputed. Teachers have to live on-campus, but the apartments are nice and big (although the area sucks). |

Thanks. |

Any word from the OP on the hiring process? Have you progressed on to have an interview? Maybe you could provide some info for those considering applying next hiring season.
Miyazaki, I believe the original post on tesol.org stated 2 months paid holiday. |

I decided not to follow up the job and withdrew myself from consideration. So, I don't have any information on the process. |

My friend's girlfriend was offered 4.8 million yen a year - Non negotiable.
What are the conditions like?
Good group of people working there?
Good management?
This is eikaiwa level money and teaching. Essentailly a glorified eikaiwa that's on a university campus.
Now that I think of it, I saw NOVA on a university campus a few weeks ago and have also seen GEOS on a university campus. |

I'm bumping an old topic here. Can somebody offer more detailed information on the apartments? I'm looking for details like the number of bedrooms, the layout (2LDK?), and the approximate size in square feet/meters.

There are a few words about it here... http://forums.eslcafe.com/job/viewtopic.php?p=462949&highlight=kansai+gaidai#462949
I think you're right, it's a good new-to-Japan job. You'll probably find it easy to make friends since all the teachers live together in an apartment complex. Some teachers like it there a lot, and stay for many years. In my opinion though, there are positions out there with a better salary, fewer classes, and in a nicer part of Japan. But for a first job, it's ok.
If you do decide to move out after a few years, it would probably be a good idea to study a little Japanese in your free time. I think some people get locked into the free apartment and university- safety net, then the task of finding an apartment on their own overwhelms them into staying (you could also find a helper to do it for you). |
I went to school there. I don't know anything about the working conditions, but it was a great place to live. The Kansai area is such a lively fun area. Hirakata isn't bad, it's big enough to have some real things like malls and good sports clubs, without being crazy expensive like Tokyo. |

Speaking as a previous student, the location of the campus (Hirakata city) is located about a ~20 minute train ride via the Keihan line out of Kyobashi, which is very close to the "heart" of Osaka. However, after getting to Hirakata city via train, you are looking at either an ~8 minute bus ride or a ~20 minute walk on foot (up hill) to the campus itself. |

Whoa! 20 minute walk from the station! When you say, "Up hill", does that mean a really steep hill? Any way you look at it, if it's 20 minutes up hill that is unfortunate. How'd you like the campus and facilities? |
