Hi,
I did the CELTA last year, but couldn't start my job hunt until this year, due to changing circumstances in the interim. I've been looking at different schools, and have seen a job that I'd really like. One of the questions on the application form is something like 'what are your views on teaching English as a foreign language?'. Obviously, I'd like my answer to be as relevant and detailed as possible, but I'm not too sure what exactly the school is looking for? Do they want me to regurgitate what I learned on the CELTA, like stuff about the teacher as facilitator, how to motivate students, adapting the coursebook etc.? Are the looking for a critique of different methodological approaches? Or are they looking for reasons why I want to teach in a different country?

They want to know your views about classroom approaches and methods, not why you want to teach/live in a foreign country.
It's a bit of a trick question, perhaps. Your response will show the school the degree to which you are thinking of the job and students as versus the degree to which you are thinking of yourself and what the experience will mean to you.
No, not a critique of different methods - that would also be off-task. Just describe what kinds of things you think work in a TEFL classroom. |

Don't "regurgitate" anything. Reviewers will know if you are just spouting from textbooks or lectures, especially if your credentials show you have no experience yet.
They want to know how you feel. It's pretty open-ended as to where you want to take the topic. Think of it as finishing these sentences with separate paragraphs:
I think teachers should/shouldn't...
I think students should/shouldn't...
I think schools should/shouldn't...
Go from there. |
