|
|
-I have a B.A. in English, CELTA and years of relevant experience in Korea. I was provisionally hired as a Primary NET over a year ago but still haven't been hired. Now I have the chance to take a 2-week YL course beginniing Aug. 7th. Would it likely help me finally land a job or would I be wasting my time and money? I actually want to eventually be a Secondary NET and then take the PGDE pt pver 2 years. thanks! |

don't do the YL extension. Save your money for the real teaching qual (PGDE).
The NET Scheme only wants a CELTA or equiv. |

what you mean to write is that you passed the "interview stage" with the EdB, but haven;t had any schools contact you?

That's right but the wording they used after I passed the interview and test was that I was "provisionally hired." I guess I won't bother with the YL and thanks for the advice. I guess I'll take nearly any HK job I can get just so I can get into the PGDE. After a year with that the salary's about 6K USD/month, right? |

I did the CELTA YL about 3 or 4 years back with British Council Hong Kong. Since I worked there it was free. I thought the course was ok, similar to some bits and pieces on CELTA but much less stressful and a few extra ideas on how to teach kids. Felt like doing a refresher course.
Did it help get a job? - perhaps very slightly - it just showed that I kept 'developing'. Could have done any short course for that effect.
Was it worthwhile for free? - certainly.
Would I pay for it? - nope, doubt it. |

The EdB just screens applicants and schools do the hiring. You're not assured of a position at all; do not resign from your current school just because you've passed the EdB's interview.
Why would you "take nearly any HK job" ?? You can take a PGDE anywhere; why HK? It is not certain that a PGDE earned in HK will be recognized elsewhere.
No, your salary with a PGDE and 1 year's experience (no experience prior to having a qual is considered for your salary: you'll start at the bottom of the scale even with 30 years of pre-qual teaching) would be HK$25,460 per month, plus allowance. That's point #19 on this scale: http://www.csb.gov.hk/english/admin/pay/42.html
good luck. |
