Can anyone give me a rough idea of teacher salaries in the UAE these days? I've been out of the UAE for a few years now and need a bit of an insight into the type of money I could expect to earn with 9 years teaching experience, managerial experience in the UAE and the UK, BA Applied Linguistics and TEFL, CELTA, DELTA and MA Applied Linguistics and TESOL. Any advice much appreciated.

From reports I've gotten within the past month from places like HCT, most new hires are being brought in at 15000-16000 even if they have 5-10 years of experience. So, I'd say 18000 might be very much on the high end in this current market.

I guess it depends on one's definition of "this current market." If the reports of HCT having so much trouble hiring are accurate (and from my personal experience with HCT I believe they are), then by offering 15-16K they are merely cutting their own throats (and again, from my personal experience with them I know HCT excels at that).

24 seems unlikely from what I have heard! Who is paying 24?? I was expecting about 16 or 17 and thought that was fairly decent.

HCT has offered most new hires 20,000 once they negotiated.

Is that including or excluding an accommodation allowance?

HCT normally provides housing plus a furniture allowance. So that would have to be salary and small allowances. (transportation... utilities)

I haven't heard from anyone who got 20K, but I do know of a couple teachers with significant ME experience who got between 18-19K. I'd say with your credentials, you should be able to negotiate.

When I was there (recently) there was no allowance for utilities...you pay, and that can range from a couple of hundred dirhams per month up to a couple of thousand per month depending on the time of year and the nature of the accommodation.

There was no allowance for local transportation, just an annual airfare allowance.

Regarding the furniture allowance...that's a LOAN that's amortized over the length of the 3-yr contract. You leave early and you pay back a pro-rated amount. So don't go crazy spending all the allowance at once. Yes, you can try to sell your stuff to recover part of the money, but if it's not at just the right time, there's no one to sell it to.

I always thought those little allowances were rather silly anyway. They never had any relation to costs. How much is the airfare allowance? ...a per person thing? (single versus married versus married with kiddies?)

We need to know if it is included when people mention offers...

The airfare allowance depends on your home of record. For me it was about $2800.

Yeah, I agree, it'd be better if people would specify the elements of "offers." For HCT, the salary quote from them didn't include the airfare allowance.

I'd advise negotiating up from any offer from HCT, which have managed to dig themselves a deep hole with regards to faculty retention.

They'd never admit that, though.

Sorry, I have no idea. Maybe someone else can step up and answer that one.
