To rogan,
Wuhan is NOT in East China. It is almost exactly in the middle between Peking and Guangzhou, straddling both sides of the mighty Yangtse River.
It has subtropical climate, which translates as cool to cold winters (I survived thanks to an electric blanket - houses have no heating systems). Summers are a bit hot and sticky, at least as bad as in Guangzhou (although it is more to the north). Many buildings have aircons.
I personally consider Wuhan an interesting and friendly place. It is one of the few cities where I used to be invited into the home of a local person even in the less-than good old days (when foreign nationals were spied upon).
There are a number of colonial-style buildings on the north side of the river, in Hankou, from the British concession days. The combined rail- and road bridge is a major sightseeing spot because of its sheer size.
Trains from the south or the north have to stop two times, once in Hankou, and once in Wuchang.
There are large universities around the East Lake park in Wuchang, and there are other institutions of higher learning in Hankou.

Wuhan has been described as the industrial armpit of China.

That should be amended to read "an" not "the" because almost every major city in China is an industrial armpit.

However, having taught in Wuhan, I can honestly say I was sorry to leave and would not hesitate to return were it not for the fact that I am employed for the next ten years where I am and I get everything I need and want so there is no motivation to return to Wuhan.

I must confess that I am only three hours North of Wuhan and often climb on my road bike and motor on down to Wuhan, it only taking 3 hrs. to drive my 250cc there. I must go there to fly anywhere since we have no airport any clsoer. Also, it is either Wuhan or Anhui to purchase my cigars due to territorial protections that prohibit cigar sales here.

In Wuhan you will experience China's "furnace" but will enjoy sunsets eating at the sidewalk cafes drinking cheap beer and watching some very beautiful ladies stroll past.

One of the best places to work is Delter except the american country hick director is a butt head who makes the experience terrible. The organization is a good one though even though there are some bad reports to the contrary. I was there when the five reportedly walked out together. They did not! One left several weeks earlier and lied to get his release. Do not be afraid to work at Delter, just take your 5 string banjo and sing some ountain folksongs for the current hick director.

teachers listen to comrade mw. He has a motorcycle and can even play the banjo. Is there anything he cannot do? I think not. He is somewhere north of Wuhan. Maybe he can put on a seminar and we can all smoke wonderful cigars with him as he tells us of the ESL Industry and his adventures in China since 1978.
