Does anybody have any experience with this? They give you a CD thats stupidly not supported by anything other than Japanese OSs and my account login isnt working. Added difficulty: I use Linux. I was assured by the sales girl that Linux would work - I spent an hour explaining to her what Linux was and made her call somebody from tech support to confirm). However, somethings not working. Anybody? |

I actually have Flets fibre optic in conjunction with Yahoo BB.
I received a stupid install CD that I assumed wasn't compatible with a 64bit version of Windows 7 but it would make sense if my non-Japanese OS had really been the issue. I made certain to ask them whether the fact that all my computers are from the UK and have US/UK OS would be a problem, but they insisted that if I run the setup in Windows 7 everything would be fine.
Instead, I just set up a PPoE interface using Windows itself then added the supplied username and password when prompted.
Once I was certain that it was functioning, I just hooked up the modem to my router and entered the login details in the router PPoE setup tab (easier said than done since my router and all it's instructions are Japanese) so that all my equipment paired with that router can access the internet without any login protocols and removed the PPoE interface from my laptop (only because it kept on trying to log on to the internet via the ethenet despite no ethernet being plugged in). |

Those install CDs are a waste of time anyway; they mask the setup process so if something goes wrong, it's harder to fix.
The wireless router that comes with the connection (you did get one, didn't you - what manufacturer/model number?) is where the issue lies, I suspect.
My BBIQ fibre connection required that I change a setting in my Buffalo InFinity wireless router so that the interface asked for the credentials with the correct formatting. This was trivial once I found the setting, but placing it in a URL in 6-point text (seriously) at the bottom of the screen was quite possibly the stupidest design decision I've seen in years. Incidentally, the router admin pages only render properly in Chrome or IE8+.
What Linux are you using? I know it's off topic, but it's always good to meet another user. I run Ubuntu on my netbook and kids' desktop, and Fedora on my desktop in dual-boot with Win7_64. A kind soul just repackaged the old Netbook Remix interface for Natty and put it in a PPA, which means no more Unity. This makes me a very happy monkey. |

You can call the NTT English helpline, they helped me get mine set up because the 192.168.1.1 setup page is all in kanji. They talk you through it and are extremely helpful.
I only know the East number though...
NTT East: 0120-565-950 |

Agreed, CD is useless.
I also manually set everything up. |

I might be well off the mark, but I think I can guess what your problem is.
There's a Cat-5 cable connecting your PC to the modem so, naturally, you assume that this is a normal Ethernet connection. In fact, you need to use a protocol called PPPoE.
If you're using Ubuntu, the network settings application on your desktop bar doesn't know about PPPoE. You have to use a command line application called ppoeconf, which is included in Ubuntu as standard. Just launch terminal, type
and follow the prompts. (You kept that funny-looking username and password they gave you, didn't you?) |

PPPoE works out the box on any ethernet connection, if the router is set up correctly. Unfortunately, we don't know what hardware whatthefunk actually has - t would be very helpful to know the hardware that WTF has between the fibre line and the PC. |

This is think is the solution. I can detect the network, but cant figure out how to set it up. Ill give this a whirl when I get home tonight. |

One step closer, but I keep getting a "CHAP authentication failure" message. Looks like I need to edit the /etc/ppp/chap-secrets file. Does anybody know the correct syntax for an NTT fiber-optic connection with OCN as the ISP? |
