Hi Guys,
Have been looking at your Forum for a while now. Some good comments.
I am seriously thinking of a 3 mth internship in Tangshan or Zhoushan City in Aug. The schools that have expressed interest in me. Has anyone lived or visited those cities and any advice? Unfortunately, don't have uni degree, am 48 & a woman, some experience assisting others and 1 yr of teaching degree. I know they will probably get their value from me, but I have travelled a lot & don't mind experiencing new things.
Classes should be 8-20 children, teens or adults. Accom, TEFL online done before you leave- not too bad a one & stipend given so not that bad for a working holiday with a F Visa which is legal. Is the summer camp part very much different from the normal lessons?
Appreciate any comments work-wise or living-wise.
Bye from the Southern Hemisphere. |

Firstly, 'summer camp' means classes in a vacant school, nothing outside. No BBQ, no frisbee, no campfire songs, and no tents.
Usually summer classes are larger than regular classes. And usually they are 'fillers', rather than being connected to a curriculum - this means that there is (even) more apathy from students and teachers than normal.
Your prospective hosts are probably already thinking about how they can spend the money they will save by exploiting you like this. Don't believe what they tell you re: class sizes, schedule, accommodation - anything, really.. |

Yes.
If by 'experiencing new things' means 'being exploited and worked like a dog' in something akin to an English language factory then by all means, welcome to China.
If you truly want to experience something new, I strongly suggest looking at alternatives that provide a far greater reach of support to lessen the chance of being exploited/abuses.
Good luck. |
