A nice atmosphere, kindly children and a well devised, detailed, curriculum are key factors for me. I have a B.A from a well known university, a TESOL and 7+ years teachng experience in Thailand.

When and where are the best jobs to be found? Any other advice would be appreciated Smile

Relaxed, Hong Kong is not, and this is also reflected in the expectations placed on students in international schools.
If you are set on only working with the British system, check out English Schools Foundation (they have an exhaustive website) and Kellett School. The atmosphere at each of the ESF schools is quite different, depending on the principal. If you want somewhere rather more relaxed than Hong Kong, but close enough to get there with ease, try Macau Anglican College's primary department (the boss is totally not concerned with staff's religious affiliations, but there are plenty of outlets for committed Christians).

If you extend your search to schools following the curricula of other Commonwealth countries, HK also has Canadian, Singaporean and Australian system schools.

Most places have already got staffing sorted for the coming school year, but sometimes a teacher's spouse in a high-powered job gets a sudden transfer and a place will open up.

^ I didn't intend to place such an emphasis on relaxed ( I was in a terrible rush). Did your comment(s) about teaching positions being likely long-ago filled include after school/ weekend langauge school type places (if they exist in HK- I have no idea...)

To be honest I'm recovering from a serious health ding dong which knocked me into hospital and out of teaching for 2+ years so your ellusions to stereo-typical Japanese work ethic kinda of environment scare me back to thoughts of the warm embrace of Incapacity Benefit...

Yes, those centres exist, but working conditions there are likely to be a lot more stressful - with a lot less pay and holiday - than in a "real" school, specially an international one. I don't know Japan, but HK isn't like Taiwan where you can get a visa for as little as 12 hours contact teaching time a week (or at least you could 10 years ago). You have to do major due diligence to find an ethically run language centre with a boss who treats staff humanely, and it's not so easy to get feedback, as most staff in these places are so jolly exhausted after their 45 hour weeks that you won't find them on boards like this.

With your qualifications and experience I think you'd be better off looking at the PNET scheme, and just pray that you get a good principal Smile or head for Macau or Zhuhai.

I love the way so many people thinig HK is a buyer's market as far as choosing jobs is concerned. Sadly, reality check. It ain't. Get on SCMP. Send out your CV. Good luck. This isn't like Korea. You don't get to select which job will hire you. All you get to do is to send your CV along with 150 other people for the job that you think might be ok, and if you're lucky, you might get a phone call, but only if they think you are good enough to be hired from abroad rather than locally and also if your credentials and experience beat the other 150 CV's sitting on thier desk.....

SCMP is your bible at this point.......read it. Learn it.....Appreciate it.....Buy some toner for your printer because you're going to need it for sending out CV's, copies of documents and your cover letter too.

Happy hunting.
