Anyone in Mexico right now?
Can you tell me anything about how safe it is?

Do you feel safe?

Mexico is a big country! I can only speak for myself and where I live, which is in the heart of Mexico City. I live alone and do not have a car. I walk a lot to get to where I'm going (the supermarket, the laundromat, restaurants and cafes, the movies, the usual destinations), and when I need to travel farther than I can walk, I take public transportation, which is plentiful and cheap, or taxis, which are also plentiful and relatively inexpensive. I don't venture into iffy neighborhoods, especially not at night, and do not frequent bars and clubs. I almost always feel safe living and working here.

Sorry, I should have been more specific but I just wanted to get information on all parts of Mexico.

I might be in SLP by the end of this month. There are travel warnings from the State Dept about the madness that's going on (they kind of did freak me out); I wanted to know from people who are there currently.

What do you do in DF?

Here's the last US embassy update...

http://monterrey.usconsulate.gov/acs_travwarning_mexico_04222011.html

Most of it pertains to northern Mexican states. Specific warnings on San Luis Potosi are about that ICE agent that was killed some time ago, so the warnings refer to the highways.

There are at least two regular posters here in SLP (the city I think)...perhaps they'll contribute.

Yes, those are the travel warnings I said that scared me. EEP.

I wanted to get opinions from actual people living in Mexico right now, especially in SLP.

I teach English to a few private students and also do occasional translating and editing work. Since I am one of the older participants on this forum, I have two small pensions from the US, which is why I don't need to teach full-time.

As I seem to remember, the SLP posters seem to think that you are more likely to starve to death there if you don't have a pension or something to rely upon. But better they should speak for themselves. Wink

Do you really live in Los Angeles?
I've heard a lot of reports of crime and gang violence from Los Angeles. Weren't there riots there in the past?
Seems like a truely mad city to me.

I've never felt unsafe in Oaxaca.
Frustrated yes.

I agree with Mother F. Living in Los Angeles is a pretty scary thought to some of us living happily in Mexico. I've never felt very comfortable when visiting Los Angeles. I don't have that feeling in Mexico, but everyone is different.
