I guess this is the place to introduce myself before I start posting.
I'm a 24-year-old Brit currently living in Wales. I have a BA Degree in English Studies and am heading over to Playa del Carmen, Mexico, in November to do the CELTA at the IHouse there.
I love language and teaching as well as exploring new cultures and travel so this seemed like the right option for me. Once I get CELTA-qualified I'm hoping to spend some time teaching in Mexico and then maybe South America later (yeah, as I keep getting reminded, there's no money in teaching in Latin America but I'm not doing it for the money - I'm doing it for the experience and the joy of helping others with another language). I kind of thrive on hard work so I'm looking forward to it. And looking forward to getting to know everyone here too. |

Welcome to Dave's. I also invite you to check out the Mexico Forum. Despite what a few posters say on that forum and elsewhere, you can make a decent living in Latin America if you have the proper qualifications (getting a CELTA is a good start), are willing to work hard, and have a bit of luck! |

If you go for the lifestyle, rather than the money, you should be ok. |

I was under the impression that money was to be made in places like Brazil since it's one of the richest locations. I have a friend there who makes very good money teaching English full time. |

Is it possible to work legally in Brazil, or is your friend working under the table, so to speak? |

Not really. Latin America is still very second and third world. You aren't going to make what you could in places like Taiwan, Korea, Japan, or the Middle EAst. Visas are also an issue. Is your friend married to a local? Or at an intl school? Or has been there for years?
If you hit the ground running, you'll still have to run for a couple of years because you land good jobs. |

Thanks for the welcomes, guys. I'll be sure to check out the Mexico forum too.
And, yeah, like I said, money isn't an issue for me. I'm not interested in being rich or well-off. I just want the most experience out of life. |
