|
|
I will be moving to Abu Dhabi in July and would like to work as an ESL teacher at an international school. My qualifications are limited (B.A. + CELTA + one year teaching experience). As I currently do not have a teaching license, I have thought about trying to do an internship at an international school. I really only want to consider doing an internship at an international school if it will be impossible for me to get a job as a teacher at a reputable school.
1. Should I try to get an internship with the help of an organization like Search Associates or contact schools directly?
2. Should I continue to try to get a job as a teacher before considering an internship? |

You need a residency permit to live in UAE. You need a work visa to work in UAE. I've never heard of an internship for anyone. Your credentials (as you say) are limited.
You won't get any salary, no benefits even if there is such a thing as an internship (not to mention no legal docs to live and work here) - how are you planning to live let alone work? |

All interns, actually practicums, at any of the respectable schools in AD come from the "Armpit of Education".
The B.Ed. program at the HCT Women's College. All, of course, nationals.

Are you arriving with a spouse or family? Will you already be part of a family visa? Otherwise you will have a difficult time getting employment that will provide you with both the proper visas and enough income to live there. It is very expensive.
Also, this visa doesn't allow you to work. With your credentials you may very well be able to find employment at a school although I would suggest that you have low expectations as to work conditions and pay/benefits. But, we all have to start somewhere. You have the basics to get started. Hopefully it will be possible for you to get your license soon.
I'd start applying once you arrive to surrounding schools.

My husband has a job in the UAE, and I will part of a family visa. I will apply to schools when I get there and hope for the best. |

Good Luck!!
Another option is Language Schools - though they are probably part-time. They mostly hire spouses so they don't have to deal with benefits.
