I realize that there are plenty of travel insurance posts on this forum. However, I am looking to be insured for something very unique. My grandparents are getting up there in years, and I worry about them passing while I am in Japan. Of course, I plan to save enough money in case that happanes after my first couple of paychecks. However, there will be a small window (2 months) where I will be f**ked if there is an emergency at home.

Does anyone know of anyone that offers insurance that covers a plane ticket home in case a close family members dies when you are abroad? I realize that most insurance companies will create a policy for almost anything. I was wondering if anyone knows of any travel insurance companies that offer anything like this already.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Are you saying that you won't even have enough money with you when you arrive so that you could fly home for months?

Sounds like you don't have much in the way of finances. IMO, that does not bode well for anyone, to travel overseas to work and have essentially no money on them. Maybe I'm misreading things.

Does your job pay in arrears?

If so, won't it be more like a 3/4 month window that you are going to be up the creak if the worse should happen? *Touch wood that your concerns prove needless*

Yes, you can get insurance for just about everything, but that is quite a specialist policy you are looking at. I've had a scan at a few policies and none of them fork out for return flights unless something happens to the policy holder or other named travellers included on the policy.

You'll likely need to contact some insurance providers directly for quotes in your case. But I'd imagine that you would be faced with some brutal questions about your grandparents and their health since they'll want to assess the chances of your nightmare becoming reality. And then you'll likely find that the insurance premium is going to be spectacularly high.

The other problem is that many insurance companies prefer to work via reimbursement for anything not considered an emergency (in their eyes). That means unless you are sitting in a police station penniless with nowhere to stay and no food or are in a hospital requiring expensive lifesaving treatment, you could find the company sitting on its thumb whilst they try to find a reason to reject your claim or to save money by plonking you on the cheapest flight they can find (I have friends who have worked in insurance firms... some of whom felt as though they had sold their souls to the devil with the acts they were forced to perform whilst dealing with claimants). If you need them to foot the bill upfront, you could be forced to wait days if not longer; the last thing you'll need at such a distressing time.

Your best (and most cost effective) bet is to make sure you have extra cash on you from the word go or find a relative who could lend you the money in an emegency.
Or try to find a good deal on an open-dated return flight which you could use to get back should the worse happen or put towards a holiday home at a later date should your grandparents be fine.

If neither of these are options for you, then bring a credit card with a decent size limit. I believe that credit cards are the spawn of Satan, but in your case, it would be better to have one and not need it. Then when you are better off financially, cut the *beep* up so that you are not tempted to use it needlessly in the future.

Well I am bringing 400,000 Yen with me. However, a last minute round trip ticket seems to cost around $3,000 US.

I would also add that both of my grandparents are in good health right now. I am just trying to think through everything possible.

Wow! I had heard that bereavement fares had gone the way of the dodo due to abuse.

Excellent links!
