Workplace romances are the subject of numerous books.
Generally they lead to insurmountable difficulties and often loss of job for one or the other in the event of a breakup.
They can be considered sexual harrassment and the basis of subsequent litigation should the relationship sour.
There are plenty of fish in the sea. Just find a new fishing hole. |

| Generally I'd agree that workplace romances aren't a good idea, and usually end in tears, but I think when you're working aborad and there is a much smaller pool of people to choose from, and you're all in the same boat, it makes a lot of sense to date a colleague. Who else knows exactly what you go through?, who else can appreciate why you made the choice to teach abroad? |

anyway, I think there is something to be said for learning a language this way- seems to be quite effective for a motivated person-maybe easier if the local is not trying to use YOU for English lessons
there is also something to be said for a lack of B.S. conversations that we are all sick of having in any language |

Before I left the states I knew a number of couples who'd met via English teaching. Seemed like a reasonable way to find someone interesting.
Would be nice to have someone who shared the same language and understood some things like cultural humor.
On the other hand, two freaks who can't fit into their own society don't necessarily make a good pair, even if they understand each other.
Thing I've noticed in myself about freakiness is that when it comes down to it, we're actually quite used to being surrounded by normal people on some level. Even if we have freak friends there's still the larger society. And my freakiness is sensible, sane, perfectly logical. Being locked to someone else's freakiness is, well, just freaky. |

I don't think I would date a co-worker - that's just a bad idea, but I dated an English teacher while I was in Japan and it was one of the best relationship I've ever had. Things were clear from the beginning and we had so much fun together. I have also dated a japanese guy (before the other guy came along) and it was hard!! His english was really good, but the vocab was limited and he couldn't express himself correctly. He was (still is) very nice, but I needed to be stimulated (mentally, just to be clear). The teacher and I dated for almost 10 months out of a year...and then I had to leave... |

Teachers going out with ('dating' is such a stupid word) other teachers of the same rank is ok, but if one of them is more senior than the other then they're filthy paedophiles that should go to prison for a daily genital cattle-prodding. So should any manager that gets chummy with one of their underlings in any country or industry. The age of consent should be raised to 25 and anyone that disagrees should be tortured and dragged through the suburbs behind an SUV and then paraded naked and bleeding with the words 'child molester' carved into their foreheads on national TV.
And I should know because my horse is very high and it makes me feel good to look down on everyone else, so I'm eminently qualified to pass judgement on you all |

I dated a professor from another uni in another city in a cross-cultural expirament.
We are now married and sorting everything out as we go. It is not easy but it is worth it! |

Your date was an experiment or you met while on an experiment?
I don't think any marriage is easy. |

That's the funny thing on this thread - there are people judging others for their "romantic attachments". And then there are people judging others for judging.

Dear John,
Who are you to be judging others who judge others for judging the others that judge them, exactly?
Don't mess with the Judges, see? DAN WILL NOT BE BEST PLEASED, AND THOU SHALT RUE YE CONSEQUENCES.
| Quote: |
And they slew of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, all lusty, and all men of valour; and there escaped not a man.
003:030 So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest fourscore years.
003:031 And after him was Shamgar the son of Anath, which slew of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox goad: and he also delivered Israel.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
|
| Quote: |
And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the mountain: for they would not suffer them to come down to the valley:
001:035 But the Amorites would dwell in mount Heres in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became tributaries. |
Little do the Amorites realize who they are dealing with. |

Dear khmerhit,
And you - just where do you get off, judging me for judging those who are judging those who are judging others?
As for Moab, been there (Moab, Utah, that is) - lovely place, with the Arches National Park close by.
Perhaps the Amorites are the ones who stole dan's moon pies.
Regards,
John |
