In other countries, people riot against vicious dictators, savage economic cuts or brutal police.
In Vancouver, mobs take to the streets, clashing with officers, torching cars and rubbish bins, smashing windows, ransacking department stores and showering giant TV screens with beer bottles...over an ice hockey match.
This is not the first time. There were riots in 1994, also when the Canucks lost in the Stanley Cup finals, but this time there is far more destruction in the downtown area. It was horrifying to watch...a mixture of alcohol and mob psychology. So how effective were the police?

And this is the city basking in the glow of being voted the World's most livable city 2011?? Fortunately, I'm heading home tomorrow.

Unfortunately, Vancouver lacks these motivations, and has to make do with an admittedly poor substitute.

Sports losses (or even wins) have caused such behavior in so many cities, so many countries. And it's always just a miniscule percentage of the local population that takes part in the hooliganism.

My home-town is Boston, and it's certainly had its share.

"However, Vancouver is hardly the first city to erode into disorder following a major sporting event. That's why Page 2 advises you to put on your riot gear and grab a couple canisters of tear gas as we head into the fray to compile a list of the most infamous sports disturbances in history ... and we promise not to make any jokes about these guys."
