| It seems many places in China ask for a copy of your passport before you really know with whom you are dealing. Any thoughts about this are appreciated. |

| It's normal. People desire to gaze upon the applicant's face and verify nationality. The chances for identity theft seem small. |

Can't be avoided and if you're suspicious hide the number with a bit of tape before you scan it.
Once in China (assuming you aren't already) your physical passport will be taken from you for your school to complete the visa formalities. |

| This process can take 2-8 weeks so don't plan any trips where your passport will be required. Take a photocopy. |
