|
|
Hey Everyone,
I'd like to propose that there be at this time an open discussion of expected salary + benefits, i.e. packages, for ESL jobs in Oman, particularly where Colleges and Unis are concerned.
Recruiting is taking place for the new academic year, and nobody wishes to be screwed!
Lots of agencies and colleges are advertising, I've applied to a few, and simply find the already discussed ranges on the Oman forums of between 500 OR (plus benefits) and 2000 OR, confusing!
I'd like to ask the most basic question for starters, since most people will fall in this category (?) -
What can one realistically expect with an MA in English (allowing for various specialities, i.e. linguistics, ESL, writing, etc.), and 5-10 years experience.
Thanks! |

I'm sure you could get minimum 1000 RO plus housing as a minimum! |

Just check the specs in job posts in Oman here and at other websites. The BEST I've found so far is 1385, but that includes housing allowance and transportation allowance.
Someone please advise if you've found better.
Thanks.

OR1385 is the norm but I would take note of the following.
The number of hours will you be required to teach per week (contact hours).
Whether your annual vacation is offered within the year or after an entire year.
Some companies may offer the same salary as the one above (or in most cases less) but they expect you to work 25 hours a week (20 hours extra a month). They may also only offer you vacation after a full year.
You need to make sure that these things are clear in your offer letter and contract and not be upset if you agree to work for 25 hours for less money than your friends who are working 20 hours for more money. |

An offer like that is terrible and anyone considering it should be hung!
If companies find teachers that will work for $2000 a month it will bring down the entire salary range in Oman!
Do not accept an offer lower than OR1000 plus housing and transport with any company if you have any experience at all. They pay that in Korea for fresh uni students with no experience whatsoever! Why would anyone with experience and/or credentials accept such an offer! |

I agree. I don't think it is reasonable to accept anything under 1400-ish OR, since there should also for 2011/2012 be a rise, ie the normal per annum rise like in the West. In Saudi they are getting the King's money extra, and the Sultan's copycat generosity to keep the masses happy should be passed on to expats as well. Basic expenses like food are dearer in Oman. Etc. |
