Heres some info about us. Both native speakers, mid twenties, with degrees (Communication and Law), and 2 years experience teaching in a public elementary school in Korea. Im American, and I have a TEFL (120 hour with teaching assessment). My boyfriend is British, and has an online TEFL certificate (should he even bother putting that on his CV?).
Were planning to move to Bangkok sometime in April/May 2012. Is it realistic to expect to earn somewhere around 40,000/month each (without overtime or additional PT work)? And is it likely that well be able to get a job at the same school (this is important to us)?
Were planning on trying to call schools in advance to set up interviews, but is it acceptable to just show up at a school and ask if there are any job openings? If so, is there a certain time of day that is best to just pop in unannounced?
Thanks in advance :) |

You have degrees, the TEFL cert is nice to add to the resume but unless you are looking for a language academy won't mean much compared to 2 years or experience in a public school and your degree.
April is a MUCH better time to be looking in Thailand than May (school starts mid May).
In a language academy you should be able to land 40k in BKK.
Most k-12 schools will pay in the mid 30's (32-37 depending on class loads).
Larger SCHOOLS (rather than language academies) can often accommodate a teaching couple for employment.
With language centers is it hit and miss but if you are in the city just look for places close to the BTS (so the commute isn't so bad) take one job and then wait for the 2nd job to open or look for something else in close proximity (there is no shortage of jobs for degree holders who are under 50).

Thanks for the quick response!
Were planning to arrive mid April, but we most likely wont try to secure a job before we arrive. Not really sure if we want to work at a public school. 40+ kids per class seems pretty intense.
The main reason we want to work at the same place is so we can have the same holidays. Do most schools / academies offer the same holidays? |

Schools = yes. Typical school breaks are from March to mid May and again in October. Whether they give you paid holidays or just a 10 month contract is another matter (one that you should watch out for).
Academies = usually no.
There are other options rather than large public schools. Look for reasonably sized private (k-12) schools (English program, bilingual or ESL focused). You can usually land these with a degree and prior k-12 school experience.
Lower tier "international schools" may also be on your watch list for potential future employers.
Do yourself a favor and try to stay away from "agencies" (different from what you know as recruiters). They are usually more trouble than they are worth.
