Are there any countries that have lots of openings for summer jobs? I was just thinking about trying next summer so I can get a bit of experience. I don't know where I would look around St. Louis, MO, as I doubt most schools will let me just walk in and teach.

Also how many hours do you normally get when you go for your CELTA? I probably won't try for it for at least four years since I'm just now starting college.

I'm just worried that when I do finally start looking for work that my inexperience will bite me in the butt.

Everyone starts somewhere so I wouldn't worry about the inexperience.

Can;t comment on American summer schools in anyway. And how do you mean how many hours do you get for the CELTA? Observed teaching?

Come back in 4 years after you complete your degree.

For most places that an American can go to teach (outside the USA) the CELTA won't matter or be needed. Your DEGREE is what gets you the interview and visa.

For anyplace south of the Rio Grande (all the way down to the tip of S.America) and most of Asia the lack of experience won't matter either for an entry level job.

I know there's some volunteer opportunities in and around StL (previously my home town!) That would be a good way to get some experience while you focus on your degree.

As far as CELTA, it's a full-time, 4 week investment. You might be able to fit it in over the summer instead of summer-school or work.

Best of luck in your degree and planning!

*edit to add: As far as how many hours- CELTA isn't a college/university course. It's a one time 120hr commitment, and isn't discussed in terms of credit hours like you're used to at college.
You may be able to make arrangements to receive credit for it, but you'll have to work that out with your adviser and registrar.
