I've recently finished at RMIT, I must admit my time there wasn't exactly what I was looking for in a job. The teaching is quite repetitive, I wanted to take on extra responsibilities and was denied because there were "full time" teachers who were getting paid to do the extra responsibilities. Although most of these don't do any extra work than the part timers. This made me mad as they are on a lot more money than the "part timers".
They've recently changed the system to abolish the part time role. But everyone now works 40 hours a week and the part timers don't get much more money. Some of the full timers that work there are really quite useless and this system is a bit crazy.
Things they do well are the benefits in things like insurance. If you're studying an MA then you might get funding. The students can be fun but can also be useless. The campus is in a nice area (for Vietnam). They also pay well.
Things they do badly is communication between management and staff. The two tier work system is in my opinion badly handled. I don't think there are really any career options if you are that way inclined. If you don't have an MA you will constantly be overlooked for jobs whilst people with limited teaching experience and an MA take the better paid jobs. |

| I have an interview at RMIT next week and was wondering if anyone could provide me with any insider info on what goes on in the interview, and more importantly, what kind of teacher they are looking for. Thanks. |

That's what I'm hearing, also.
Good for you. I hope you make it out of here okay. |

Hi
I had an interview a number of weeks ago for an advertised teaching position at RMIT and have not heard back to date. I fulfilled all applicant requirements. I was wondering if anybody else had an interview and has/has not received a response/feedback?
I emailed the HR contact asking for a turn around date and also did not hear back. Is this normal business practice in VN and can I consider myself off the list of potential candidates?
Any advice much appreciated.
Cheers

The old adage, "No news is good news!" does not apply here.
If H.R. were interested in moving your file along you'd have heard from them by now. I knew someone a few years ago that complained to me about having similar results with their application. |

Sorry if you missed out on RMIT Neil. In case you are interested I've heard that ACET in Saigon may be looking for part-time teachers (Monday - Friday, 2 hours a night). Firstly, I should say that I know that that's not a schedule that would suit everybody. However, it apparently needs to be 10 hours a week to meet the requirements for a work permit and the school is interested in having more suitably qualified evening teachers. I guess there would also be the chance to get extra hours through covers when they come up. Good luck with the job hunt mate. |

Thanks a lot for the info mate. I've been casting a fairly wide net since leaving Korea and had recently traveled to VN and really loved it. Hanoi would be the first choice but I'll look into ACET.
Thanks again!

If you're around, why not pop in and see if you can have a chat with them about your application - if you're still interested. Sometimes that can make a difference, too. |
